🌍Materials Science Expert, Remote- Contract
About The Position
This remote contract role involves developing and evaluating challenging technical problems in materials science. Contributors create problems grounded in their area of expertise, provide correct solutions with clear reasoning, and define objective criteria for judging correctness. Problems may address structure-property relationships, processing, characterization, failure analysis, or computational materials, and should include realistic constraints and supporting data. Contributors also review other experts’ problems for technical accuracy and sound methodology, and flag problems that are ambiguous or cannot be graded reliably. The commitment is described as flexible and suitable alongside a current role.
Requirements
- Master’s or PhD in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymer science, condensed matter physics, or a closely related field.
- Principal-, staff-, or fellow-level experience in industrial or national laboratory research, or a faculty appointment at a leading university.
- Deep technical expertise in at least one materials subdomain, with hands-on ownership of the work.
- Ability to clearly explain why an answer is correct so another scientist can verify it.
- Technical depth in a subdomain, engineering judgment under constraints, and ability to recognize when an answer is wrong.

- Publications, patents, or a record of technical leadership.
- AI or LLM evaluation experience.
Responsibilities
- Design difficult technical problems in a materials science subdomain, using realistic constraints and supporting data.
- Provide correct solutions and explain the reasoning behind them.
- Define objective correctness criteria that allow another expert to reach the same verdict.
- Review problems created by other contributors for technical accuracy and soundness of method.
- Flag problems that are ambiguous or ungradable rather than submitting them.
