About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking a Materials Science and Engineering Facility Intern. This role involves supporting ongoing laboratory and office transitions by assisting with equipment relocation, workspace setup, and organizational improvements. The intern will gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, be exposed to various equipment and tools, and contribute to the development of efficient lab systems and processes.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Responsibilities

Assist in disassembling, relocating, and reassembling laboratory equipment
Maintain clean, organized, and orderly lab spaces
Label cabinets and drawers throughout the facility for improved organization
Develop and implement an inventory system for lab supplies (e.g., safety glasses, sample stubs)
Create standardized inventory cards including ordering details such as vendor websites, part numbers, quantities, and restocking timelines
Build and maintain a corresponding database to track and manage lab supplies
Conduct monthly safety checks of fire extinguishers and eyewash stations
Perform additional duties as assigned
