About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking a Materials Science and Engineering Facility Intern. This role involves supporting ongoing laboratory and office transitions by assisting with equipment relocation, workspace setup, and organizational improvements. The intern will gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, be exposed to various equipment and tools, and contribute to the development of efficient lab systems and processes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in disassembling, relocating, and reassembling laboratory equipment
  • Maintain clean, organized, and orderly lab spaces
  • Label cabinets and drawers throughout the facility for improved organization
  • Develop and implement an inventory system for lab supplies (e.g., safety glasses, sample stubs)
  • Create standardized inventory cards including ordering details such as vendor websites, part numbers, quantities, and restocking timelines
  • Build and maintain a corresponding database to track and manage lab supplies
  • Conduct monthly safety checks of fire extinguishers and eyewash stations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
