About The Position

S&C Electric Company is seeking an experienced technical professional to join its Insulation Technology team in the Technology Breakthrough and Innovation division. The role supports development and commercialization of medium-voltage electrical distribution switchgear. The engineer will apply materials science expertise across areas such as elastomers, ceramics, thermosets, thermoplastics, and composites, and will contribute practical electrical engineering skills to design, prototyping, instrumentation, and testing of electromechanical systems and insulating components. The position supports selection, specification, formulation, and qualification of materials to maximize product performance, while building an advanced understanding of materials and process technologies for future product development. The position is onsite, with a Monday–Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The estimated annual base salary range is $106,073–$140,549, and the role is eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan, subject to eligibility criteria. The work takes place indoors and outdoors in air-conditioned office and manufacturing environments. The role may involve exposure to hazardous substances, noise, energized equipment, weather extremes, and machinery, with the frequencies described in the posting.

  • Working knowledge of basic electrical circuits, instrumentation, data acquisition, and programming for laboratory automation and equipment control.
  • Self-motivated, innovative, resourceful, organized, and productive with minimal supervision.
  • Strong skills identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies and alternative solutions, and resolving issues independently and with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage time and multiple tasks.
  • Ability to combine disparate ideas into unique solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with working principles of electrical insulation, electrical field grading, partial discharge and corona effects, tracking, and dielectric breakdown within insulation materials.
  • Experience with materials formulation, molding, extrusion, specification, characterization, and qualification.
  • Practical electrical engineering skills supporting design, prototyping, instrumentation, and testing of electromechanical systems and electrically insulating components.
  • 3D CAD experience, such as SolidEdge or SolidWorks.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in cross-functional project teams supporting new product development and commercialization of medium-voltage switchgear for electrical distribution.
  • Formulate and evaluate new proprietary electrically insulating materials.
  • Design, prototype, build, and evaluate mechanical designs and electrically insulating structures and components for new product concepts.
  • Design, build, program, and troubleshoot test fixtures and automated test systems incorporating basic electrical circuits, instrumentation, sensors, controls, and data acquisition.
  • Provide materials engineering support to product development and production teams.
  • Pursue assignments with a strong desire to succeed, a sense of urgency, and a “make it happen” attitude.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.
