About The Position

This position is for a Material Handler on the day shift. The primary purpose is to work with a trainer to learn how to fill customer orders and assemble shipments of fabricated steel, warehouse steel, and other materials. Responsibilities include receiving and unloading incoming materials, locating inventory, and operating various types of material handling equipment. The role involves identifying steel types and sizes, loading/unloading trailers and railcars, and ensuring accurate material placement according to layout maps and drawings.

Requirements

  • Ability to stand FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  • Ability to walk CONTINOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  • Ability to sit only during break and lunch periods.
  • Ability to lift weights up to 30 pounds FREQUENTLY from floor to head.
  • Ability to lift weights up to 70 pounds OCCASIONALLY from knee to waist.
  • Ability to carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to 60 feet.
  • Ability to climb OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY up and down steps, ladders, onto material, or onto conveyors.
  • Ability to stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing regular job duties.
  • Ability to kneel in the commission of job duties OCCASIONALLY.
  • Ability to crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 5 feet to access tools, materials, etc.
  • Ability to reach forward FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools.
  • Ability to reach to full forward extension OCCASIONALLY.
  • Ability to reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to guide material attached to cranes, to attach chains from crane to material, to locate blocks, or to saw blocks.
  • Ability to push and pull material attached to an overhead crane or jib crane OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to properly guide into place (Force varies up to 35 pounds).
  • Ability to pull hand over hand OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to pull chain through material (Force varies up to 70 pounds).
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week; overtime and weekends may be required.
  • Sufficient hearing to be aware of safety issues.
  • Visual ability to read and interpret shop drawings.
  • Must wear safety glasses in the shop area.
  • Must wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.
  • Six months of experience in a steel manufacturing environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Fill customer orders and assemble shipments of fabricated steel, warehouse steel, and other materials.
  • Receive and unload incoming material from suppliers.
  • Locate material into inventory storage, staging areas, and work areas.
  • Identify steel shapes, sizes, and mill tolerances.
  • Locate beams, tubes, angle, channel, bar grating, pipe, plate, or rounds according to layout shown on yard map, cut lists and shop drawings.
  • Load/unload trailers, railcars, and saw horses.
  • Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, jib cranes, gantry cranes, conveyors, and transfers to move materials.
  • Attend all meetings as required by management.
  • Consistently and reliably work scheduled hours at assigned locations.
