About The Position

The fundamental reason this job exists is to supervise and instruct mechanics and auto servicers and perform highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of trucks, heavy equipment, automobiles, farm equipment, motorcycles and fire apparatus (City) and to perform highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of trucks, heavy equipment, and farm equipment (County). Assists the superintendent in the overall supervision and management of the division.

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of recent experience as an automotive mechanic.
• At least one year of independent lead-mechanic experience.
• Proficiency in computer-based testing and diagnostic equipment.
• A current Alabama Driver's License with an insurable driving record.
• Willingness to obtain an Alabama Commercial Driver’s License.
• A valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A) from the State of Alabama is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
• Ability to lift and maneuver heavy equipment, engine components, and body parts, such as batteries and brake drums, weighing between 50-100 pounds, both with and without assistance.
• Capable of standing for extended periods of up to 3-4 hours to perform repairs.
• Ability to stoop, bend, and crouch as required during maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Supervises mechanics and servicers in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair of large trucks, off-road heavy equipment, automobiles, light trucks, motorcycles, small engines, and fire apparatus (City).
• Performs equipment repair work on light, medium and heavy duty trucks, and off-road equipment.
• Communicates with parts department personnel, businesses, other divisions and supervisors.
• Performs miscellaneous functions.
• Troubleshoots and performs repairs on electrical systems on various makes and models of vehicles.
• Performs repairs on hydraulic system on various makes and models of heavy equipment.
• Troubleshoots and repairs brake systems.
• Performs the more difficult repairs as needed.
