About The Position

SCWIST is seeking a creative and strategic Marketing & Communications Coordinator to help amplify our voice and expand our impact. This role focuses on supporting the connection between our high-impact projects and the communities we serve. It is well suited for someone who is detail-oriented, collaborative and passionate about storytelling and digital engagement. The Marketing & Communications Coordinator will support the leadership team in developing and executing the annual marketing and communications strategy, aligned with SCWIST's mission, vision and values. Working closely with project managers and senior leadership, this role will manage content across social media platforms, support brand consistency and help produce high-quality collateral in collaboration with graphic designers. The position also contributes to refining marketing workflows, communication channels and event promotion processes to increase efficiency and organizational reach. Additionally, the coordinator will develop and track key performance indicators, compile metrics to report on campaign effectiveness, maintain media contacts, support newsletter production, update the SCWIST website and collaborate with the events team to ensure all programming reinforces SCWIST's communications strategy.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably in a non-profit or equity-focused environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism or a related field, required.
  • Must be professionally fluent in English (for speaking, writing, listening and reading); bilingual in English and French is an asset.
  • Experience supporting or managing professional social media accounts (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) and assisting with digital growth strategies.
  • Familiarity with Canadian media outlets and/or STEM influencers, an asset.
  • Experience with marketing and communications and different social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to pair compelling visual design with clear, audience‑appropriate messaging to produce high‑quality communications that elevate and accurately represent the organization’s brand.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize and execute a well‑structured, strategic marketing calendar that aligns with organizational goals and drives consistent, timely communications.
  • Passionate about SCWIST’s mission and values, with a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in STEM.
  • Background or experience in STEM is considered an asset.
  • Capacity to adapt and problem-solve in an evolving project environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with diverse audiences and capture impact.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently in a remote environment while fostering collaboration.
  • Familiarity with collaborative project management and organizational systems management software (such as Asana, Canva and Google Workspace)
  • Willingness and ability to travel regionally or nationally as required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the leadership team in developing and executing the annual marketing and communications strategy, aligned with SCWIST's mission, vision and values.
  • Help maintain the SCWIST brand; work with graphic designers to produce high-quality collateral and ensure communications maintain a cohesive visual and verbal identity.
  • Assist in evaluating and refining marketing workflows, communication channels and event promotion processes to increase efficiency and organizational reach.
  • Collaborate with project managers and teams to provide day-to-day marketing support for key deliverables, helping ensure project milestones are communicated effectively to target audiences.
  • Liaise with senior leadership to gather information on upcoming activities and translate organizational goals into actionable promotional content.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs); collect and compile metrics to help report on the effectiveness of project communications and marketing campaigns.
  • Create and schedule engaging content across all social platforms.
  • Help maintain a media contact list (journalists, science bloggers, industry influencers) to support earned media coverage for SCWIST initiatives and advocacy work.
  • Support the production of regular newsletters to keep the membership base informed and retained.
  • Update the SCWIST website to ensure events, news and programming information remain current, accessible and optimized for user engagement.
  • Maintain a library of standardized templates, marketing manuals and collateral for both virtual and in-person delivery.
  • Work with the events team to review event content for strategic fit, helping ensure all programming reinforces the SCWIST communications strategy.
  • Support the promotional lifecycle and logistical coordination for webinars and flagship programming to drive registration and attendee engagement.
  • Collaborate with the fundraising team to help create compelling materials, annual reports and donor impact stories to aid in grant applications and corporate sponsorships.
  • Help ensure corporate sponsors receive their promised marketing recognition (logo placement, social media shout-outs) across all platforms.
  • Some travel will be required regionally or nationally to attend meetings, convenings or conferences.
