About The Position

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) is seeking a Marine Metal Trades Corporate Trainer for a limited-term position until December 31, 2027. This role is based at the North Coast Marine Manufacturing Center, NWTC-Sturgeon Bay campus, and associated shipyards. The primary purpose of this role is to design engaging instruction and assessment to foster learner success, continually improving the quality of learning delivery to support college outcomes. Trainers work in alignment with the college’s mission, vision, core values, and operating principles, and are expected to provide service through teamwork, committee involvement, and shared leadership. This includes ongoing professional growth in both training and technical areas, as well as the development of colleagues and teams. The trainer will provide customized training for naval vessel construction, including welding, ship fitting, pipefitting, and outfitting, in a customer-directed, work-based environment.

Requirements

Minimum of a technical diploma and two years successful direct occupational experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience required.
Five years successful direct industrial experience preferred.
Must pass Practical Weld Test.
Microsoft Office Suite
The ability to work a flexible schedule including 10 hours a day primarily student facing.
Knowledge of ship and shipyard terminology required.
Manage classroom and lab by performing preventative maintenance on all equipment. This includes updating guards and safety modifications per OSHA regulations which ensure a productive and safe learning environment, and management of materials and consumables.
Must be able to weld out of position and run mechanized welding equipment.
Ability to weld in the following processes: SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, and Brazing.
Ability to work non-standard hours including evenings and weekends.
Ability to assist students with a variety of technical course material in an open, self-directed, trainer assisted manufacturing technology environment.
Ability to certify in visual testing (VT).
Ability to assist students with a variety of technical course material in an open, self-directed, trainer assisted manufacturing technology environment.
Maintain student confidentiality and professionalism.
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Safety Protection as needed for the job.)
Exposure to dust, fumes and noise is part of the work environment.
An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

Corporate Trainers are encouraged to complete the Faculty Quality Assurance System Professional Development.
Recognized Welding Certifications preferred, such as Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Welding Educator (CWE), ASNT NDT Level II Certification, and ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level III Certification.
Previous teaching experience with adult learners is desired.
Auto Cad and Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.
Knowledge and familiarity of ABS American Bureau of Rules: Steel Vessel Rules, Rules of Building and Classing Aluminum Vessels, Guide for Building and Classing High Speed Naval Craft preferred.
Knowledge of and familiarity with Naval Fabrication Documents-shipfitter, ABS Surface Ship, Workmanship documents (company specific), and Mil-Std 248 preferred.

Responsibilities

Develop and continually revise curriculum that includes multicultural perspectives, core abilities, and technical content to meet industry or regulatory standards to prepare graduates for successful careers.
Utilize engaging instructional strategies and methodologies which foster student success both in and outside of the classroom.
Create learning experiences which integrate multiple alternative or emerging delivery methodologies and instructional technologies to maximize student success, including, but not limited to, hybrid, face-to-face, video conferencing, self-paced, and on-line course delivery.
Provide immediate, routine, and consistent feedback to students to assist them in improving performance in technical and core ability competencies.
Create a learning environment that integrates best practices for student success including authentic service learning, student club events, and engagement in profession specific activities.
Develop, support, participate and collaborate with other departments on student recruitment, program marketing, and referral of students as needed for student success strategies including tutoring, counseling, advising, etc.
Use data to measure quality outcomes related to student persistence, retention, completion rate, course success, and to design improvement strategies based on the evidence.
Comply with College policies and practices related to instruction, assessment, and delivery.
Engage with business and industry through engagement and participation in advisory committees, including the recruitment of new members, planning of meetings, participation in community groups, and business visits.
Participate in community and college-sponsored events to promote the college’s programs and enhance community relationships.
Engage in division, department and team meetings and requirements including the development and completion of the college’s strategic planning through team action plans and budget requests.
Maintain proficient knowledge and skill in emerging trends and current occupational practices by networking with regional industry leaders and participating in continuing education and professional development.
Assist in the development of adjunct faculty through communication, sharing of resources, coaching and mentoring.
Provide customized training required to construct a naval vessel to include: Welding, Ship fitting, Pipefitting, and Outfitting training to meet the needs of a marine manufacturing organization in a customer directed and work-based environment.
Manage and design the instructional process, associated curriculum review and development, and student guidance within the area of training to include courses/topics for basic hull construction, blueprint reading, metal cutting, visual inspection, Welding (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW), Ship fitting, Pipefitting and Brazing, Outfitting, and Metal Fabrication.
Perform welding and brazing demonstrations with all tools and machines that students will utilize.
Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety incidents and ensure proper reporting documentation.
Engage in positive communication with external customer leadership by sharing feedback, progress, achievement, and student concerns.
Utilize Visual Testing (VT) certifications to inspect welds and brazes in accordance with Naval standards.
Ensure students comply with and adhere to customer safety rules and regulations, in addition to standard NWTC safety policies and industry standards.
Teach students safe use of multiple brands of equipment used in labs for cutting, grinding, brazing, and welding.
Learn and execute destructive and non-destructive testing methods per MIL-STD 248.
Understand and Qualify (V.T.) for completing WPQ weld quality sheets.
Monitor material usage, & consumables.
Practice 5s and lean manufacturing and management.
Collaborate with account executives and project management coordinators to scope additional opportunities.
Developing customized curriculum to external business and industry.
Implement daily lab and lecture schedule for multiple concurrent training cohorts.
