About The Position

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and other marine equipment within the Department of Transportation, Ferry Division. Assignments are received from a Marine Mechanic Supervisor, and employees perform tasks ranging from general to moderately complex, requiring on-the-job training related to ferry vessels. Guidance is provided by a marine mechanic, with supervision adjusted based on assignment difficulty. This role may also assist other entities in the Ferry Division and could require overnight travel. The employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. All other duties as required by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and overhaul diesel engines, including disassembly, inspection, and re-assembly of various engine components such as valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears and chains, valve mechanisms, injectors, and pumps.
  • Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches, and couplings.
  • Replace propeller shafts and bearings, and align them to the engines.
  • Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps, and hydraulic pumps.
  • Utilize bench grinders, hand grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operate drill presses and hydraulic presses.
  • Read, understand, and utilize blueprints.
  • Use common cutting tools.
  • Read conversion charts for fraction to decimal and standard to metric units.
  • Use measuring instruments including dial calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, radius gauges, multimeters, and telescoping gauges.
  • Perform related duties as required.
