Manufacturing Testing Manager

SPT Labtech•Covina, CA

About The Position

SPT Labtech is seeking a Manufacturing Testing Manager to lead testing of precision dispensing head assemblies before shipment, from incoming inspection through final leak and functional release. The manager will develop and execute a test strategy that supports production schedules, standardize test processes and procedures, and lead root cause analysis of failures. The role makes go/no-go release decisions for each unit and works closely with production, supplier quality, and the international engineering team. The role oversees day-to-day test operations, including scheduling, staffing, equipment, and throughput. It owns the full test lifecycle, test procedures and criteria, golden reference units, and fixture and instrument calibration. It also leads failure analysis, corrective actions, continuous improvement, and the introduction of test technologies and methods. The manager ensures test processes and records comply with the ISO 9001 quality system, handles NCR and CAPA procedures, tracks performance KPIs, and supports CE marking and customer audits. The role contributes to new product introduction and design transfer, collaborates with supplier quality and assembly teams, represents testing in cross-functional forums, and serves as the site test contact for international engineering. It also hires, trains, certifies, mentors, and develops test technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, or quality engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 7 years of experience in test, quality, or manufacturing engineering for precision instruments, medical devices, or fluidic assemblies.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing technicians or a manufacturing test team.
  • Hands-on experience with leak and pressure-decay testing and sealing design, including O-rings and gland dimensions.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, surface-finish specifications, and mechanical drawings.
  • Demonstrated use of structured root cause analysis methods such as 8D, 5-Why, and fishbone, and statistics such as SPC, Cp/Cpk, and DOE.
  • Experience working under ISO 9001, including NCR/CAPA and document control.
  • Experience with SAP or an equivalent ERP system.
  • Strong communication skills at all levels and the ability to make independent, informed decisions under tight deadlines and changing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with liquid-handling or life-science laboratory automation instruments.
  • Familiarity with surface metrology, such as profilometry or optical measurement systems, and machined-part cleanliness, including deburring and residue.
  • Knowledge of stainless steel grades for machined parts and passivation.
  • Background in Lean Manufacturing.
  • ASQ certification (CQE, CQM, or CRE) or Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
  • Test automation experience, such as LabVIEW or Python.
  • Experience with CE marking technical files and customer or notified-body audits.
  • Multi-site experience working with an overseas engineering or parent-company team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a manufacturing test strategy aligned with production schedules and business goals.
  • Oversee daily test operations, including scheduling, staffing, equipment, and throughput against the production plan.
  • Own the test lifecycle from requirements and test plans through execution, defect tracking, and reporting.
  • Own leak, pressure-decay, and functional test procedures, and establish pass/fail criteria with engineering.
  • Maintain golden reference units to ensure test results remain comparable over time.
  • Keep test fixtures and instruments calibrated and maintained to minimize downtime.
  • Allocate and manage test resources, including personnel, equipment, and budget.
  • Lead root cause analysis of test failures using 8D, 5-Why, and fishbone methods, and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Design and run structured design-of-experiments test plans to isolate causes of failures.
  • Arrange external metrology when in-house capability is insufficient.
  • Drive continuous improvement and cost reduction through test automation and process simplification.
  • Evaluate and introduce new test technologies, tools, and methods.
  • Standardize test processes, SOPs, work instructions, and records under the ISO 9001 quality system.
  • Execute nonconformance and CAPA procedures related to test results.
  • Establish and monitor yield, throughput, and quality KPIs, and brief senior leadership on performance and risks.
  • Support CE marking and customer audits with complete, traceable test records.
  • Support new product introduction and design transfer, including test method development and validation.
  • Work with supplier quality on incoming inspection of machined parts and provide test data feedback to suppliers.
  • Partner with assembly teams on build practices that affect test yield.
  • Represent testing in cross-functional forums and serve as the site test contact for the international engineering team.
  • Hire, train, certify, mentor, and develop test technicians, including leading performance reviews and career development.
