About The Position

Coherent Corp. is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Technician to join its Operations group in Budd Lake, New Jersey. This role operates manual and automated grinding, lapping, and polishing equipment to fabricate and finish optical crystals and components. The technician sets up equipment, fixtures parts, prepares tooling and abrasives, performs inspections and measurements, documents results, and follows established safety and quality procedures. The position supports crystal fabrication and polishing, thin-film coating, optical inspection, and optical assembly. Work includes preparing and finishing optical crystals to specified dimensional and optical requirements; cleaning and coating components; conducting visual, dimensional, surface-quality, spectral, adhesion, and other inspections; and assembling components into photonic products. The technician also maintains accurate production and inspection records, identifies defects and process deviations, performs routine equipment checks and basic troubleshooting, and supports engineering builds, process qualification, investigations, training, and continuous-improvement activities. This is a 100% on-site role in Budd Lake, NJ. The work takes place in an industrial manufacturing environment and involves regular use of manufacturing equipment and machinery, as well as a computer and other office equipment. The stated second shift is approximately 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Requirements

1–3 years of experience in a complex, high-mix environment.
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for automated equipment.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods in a production environment.
Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds of material or equipment on the manufacturing floor.
Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer or in meetings.
Ability to use hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
Ability to occasionally lift objects or materials up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks.
Adhere to applicable task safety requirements, including safety shoes, fire-retardant suits, full-face respirators, and hot-work PPE when handling molten material in a furnace.

Responsibilities

Saw, core, grind, drill, shape, lap, and dimension optical crystals using precision equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
Prepare polishing tools and slurries, and polish crystals to meet specified dimensions, surface finish, flatness, parallelism, radius, and optical quality.
Clean and fixture components; verify part numbers and coating recipes; operate coating equipment and optical monitoring systems; and perform post-coating inspection and testing.
Perform visual, dimensional, surface-quality, spectral, adhesion, and other required inspections using microscopes, gauges, interferometers, spectrometers, and related equipment.
Assemble crystals and components into optical isolators, modulators, and related photonic products, including cleaning, bonding, soldering, alignment, and precision mechanical assembly.
Complete travelers, inspection records, and electronic manufacturing records accurately; identify and report defects, nonconformances, and process deviations.
Perform equipment setup, routine checks, basic troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and process adjustments within authorized limits.
Follow cleanroom, ESD, laser-safety, chemical-handling, contamination-control, environmental, health, and safety requirements.
Support engineering builds, new product introduction, process qualification, root-cause investigations, training, and continuous-improvement activities while meeting production, quality, yield, and schedule requirements.
Follow site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. corporate EHS standards.
Depending on location, execute and maintain applicable ISO 9000, 9001, 14001, and other relevant Quality Management System and Environmental Management System standards.
