Manufacturing Technician B - 3rd Shift

L3Harris•Huntsville, AL
•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Manufacturing Technician to work at its Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) North in Huntsville, Alabama, an inert manufacturing facility that fabricates and assembles small, medium, and large case composite rocket motor hardware. The position produces parts, components, and final assemblies using composite fabrication, compression molding, metal fabrication, modification, checkout, rework, quality testing, and assembly. Work follows detailed work instructions, schematics, diagrams, and layouts, and may involve manufacturing test development or diagnostic equipment. Most of the role focuses on composite manufacturing. Under supervision, the technician performs basic filament-winding machine operations and supports fiber placement and tension control, resin mixing and checks, and towpreg winding-cell setup. The role primarily supports medium-sized products and may provide a supporting role on larger, more complex products. The technician also prepares components for lay-up, winding, curing, and post-curing; performs vacuum bagging, structural bonding, complex layups, tooling work, mandrel insulation, and mandrel casting, curing, and machining; and assembles piece parts into subassemblies. The technician operates manufacturing machinery and shop equipment, troubleshoots processes and equipment, performs routine maintenance and minor repairs, and supports quality checks, production documentation, safety initiatives, and 5S+1 standards. The position also contributes to development hardware and process improvements, identifies and escalates out-of-control processes or production escapes, provides feedback to engineers, and may facilitate on-the-job training. The technician works with management and supervision to meet critical deadlines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 4 years of prior relevant experience; alternatively, 2 years of post-secondary education or an associate degree and 0 to 2 years of prior related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic filament-winding machine operations under supervision, applying an understanding of fiber placement and tension control.
  • Assist with resin mixing and resin-content checks.
  • Set up towpreg winding cells, including handling spools, stringing machines, and assembling and maintaining the towpreg delivery head.
  • Fabricate skirts, including skirt dam installation, film adhesive application, and unidirectional mat application.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve less complex winding-process or equipment issues; provide process feedback and collaborate with engineers.
  • Produce parts, components, and final assemblies through composite fabrication, compression molding, metal fabrication, modification, checkout, rework, quality testing, and assembly.
  • Prepare components for lay-up, filament winding, cure, and post-cure using cured and uncured rubber materials and adhesives.
  • Operate manufacturing machinery and shop equipment, including ovens, autoclaves, lathes, milling centers, boring mills, presses, furnaces, mixers, grinders, swages, paint booths, fume hoods, and overhead cranes.
  • Assemble piece parts into completed subassemblies using assembly tools.
  • Perform vacuum bagging and related composite fabrication and curing processes.
  • Complete structural bonding using film adhesives, core materials, and adhesives.
  • Build complex layups individually and in small groups.
  • Build, clean, and properly store large tooling.
  • Insulate mandrels and composite cases; cast, cure, and machine sand mandrels.
  • Facilitate and conduct on-the-job training of technicians as required.
  • Work with management and supervision to meet critical deadlines.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs without supervision; keep the wind cell and winding machines clean and orderly.
  • Monitor production and take responsibility for intermediate-level quality-control checks.
  • Complete manufacturing forms and reports accurately.
  • Support safety initiatives and follow 5S+1 standards.
  • Produce development hardware for research and development programs.
  • Troubleshoot processes; identify, modify, or escalate out-of-control processes and production escapes.
  • Assist in developing process-improvement actions within the facility.
