About The Position

Apple’s Brittles Manufacturing Quality Engineering (MQE) team manages product and material quality for products and components made from glass, ceramic, sapphire, and other brittle materials. The team works with Apple Product Design, Industrial Design, and vendors to bring designs into production using statistical and systematic quality-control methods and AI/ML applications in mass production. MQE develops, applies, and maintains quality standards for materials, processes, and products, and solves quality-engineering problems creatively and effectively. The intern will develop dashboards and quality tools, apply machine-learning and deep-learning or data-mining methods to train automated optical inspection (AOI) systems and reduce misjudgment, and work with project MQE teams to qualify and introduce inspection machines into mass production. The role also involves explaining and presenting AI/ML analyses and technical models to a broad technical audience. The internship lasts 3–6 months and is full-time, based in Changsha or Shenzhen, with 90% business travel to suppliers’ factories.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
  • Clear and logical thinking.
  • Fundamental knowledge of computer vision and machine-learning techniques for building models deployable in a manufacturing environment, including AOI.
  • Technical skills in machine or computer vision and machine learning, such as CNNs, transformers, object detection, and image classification.
  • Familiarity with mechanical metrology system evaluation processes, such as GRR, correlation, stability, and reliability.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Computer Science, Industrial Design, Applied Mathematics, Optics and Fine Mechanics, or an equivalent field is preferred.
  • Experience with Python and Tableau for dashboard or analysis-tool development is preferred.
  • Some project-management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop dashboards and quality-analysis tools using Tableau or Python.
  • Use machine-learning, deep-learning, or data-mining models to train AOI systems and reduce misjudgment rates.
  • Work with project MQE teams to qualify and introduce inspection machines into mass production.
  • Explain and present AI/ML analyses and technical models to a broad technical audience.
