This onsite position is designed to help individuals with little or no machining or grinding experience develop the skills needed to become a Certified Operator at Pratt & Whitney. Selected employees attend a three-week training program followed by four to eight weeks of on-the-job training. The weekend schedule is Friday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; employees work 36 hours and are paid for 40 hours. With training, operators set up and operate NC milling and grinding machines, vertical turret lathes, or VTCs to perform routine production operations on similar weldments and assemblies. They use operation sheets, part travelers, BOROPS, and oral instructions to set up equipment for grinding, turning, facing, boring, and chamfering operations. Operators verify finished work against specifications with precision measuring instruments, obtain certification to accept or reject parts, and perform required total preventive maintenance. They also collaborate with engineers, quality assurance, programmers, and production personnel to resolve machining problems and support part process development.
