About The Position

Our site in Aurora, IL is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Co-Op to join our team for the Spring 2027 season. This assignment is intended to be 6 months in duration. In this role, you will support the quality and documentation priorities of the Slurries business unit, working alongside our manufacturing engineers across the mixing, blending, and filling room processes. You will lead a systematic refresh of critical process documentation — SOPs, batch cards, response flow checklists, and work instructions — and support quality investigations using process and quality data. You will finish the assignment with hands-on manufacturing experience, a broad network across engineering, operations, and quality, and documentation and quality improvements that outlast your term.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering, with an interest in manufacturing quality and process documentation.
  • Strong technical writing skills — able to turn floor observations and engineering input into clear, accurate, usable procedures.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the discipline to carry documentation through review and approval to completion.
  • Comfortable with data analysis tools (Excel, Minitab, JMP, Power BI or similar); exposure to Six Sigma, statistical process control, or quality systems is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interviewing operators and presenting leadership.
  • Adaptable, proactive, and technologically savvy, with a passion for problem-solving and a willingness to learn from experienced engineers.

  • Available to work 40 hours a week, M-F (8a-5p) beginning in January through June
  • Must be familiar with the university’s requirements to participate in a co-op program

Nice To Haves

  • Desired Major(s) & Graduation Year: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering; coursework or project experience in quality engineering, statistics, data analytics, or machine learning is a plus.
  • Anticipated graduation: December 2027 through June 2029.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update critical process documentation for the Slurries lines — Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), batch cards, response flow checklists, and operator work instructions — and drive them through the review and approval process.
  • Audit existing documentation against current practice on the floor, identify gaps and outdated content, and maintain a prioritized plan to close them.
  • Support quality investigations and root-cause analysis on nonconformances, customer complaints, and scrap/rework drivers, including data collection, analysis, and verification of corrective actions.
  • Analyze quality and process data to identify variation and improvement opportunities, and help build dashboards or reports that make quality performance visible to the team.
  • Support audit and compliance readiness, including document control practices, training records, and change documentation.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, and Quality teams, and present project status and results to the Slurries leadership team, including a final summary of outcomes and recommendations.
