About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer will support externally funded engineering, prototyping, and manufacturing projects conducted through the Center for Manufacturing & Technology, i.e. Makerspace. The position focuses on delivering applied engineering solutions for industry partners through contract work that generates revenue for the center. The Manufacturing Engineer will develop prototypes, manufacture components, operate advanced fabrication equipment, and support the execution of engineering projects for external clients. This role requires strong hands-on engineering skills and the ability to translate client requirements into manufacturable designs and technical solutions. The Manufacturing Engineer will collaborate with technical staff and student assistants to execute industry projects while maintaining high standards of quality, documentation, and project delivery. The candidate must be able to support and promote the University’s Mission and contribute to sustaining and growing MakerSpace operations through externally funded work. This position includes performance expectations tied to revenue generation and project execution, including supporting a consistent pipeline of external projects, contributing to annual contract revenue targets, maintaining high equipment utilization, and ensuring timely delivery of client work. Success in this role will be measured by project throughput, revenue contribution, client satisfaction, and repeat business with industry partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology
  • Capable of operating advanced manufacturing and prototyping equipment including CNC machine tools (Tormach), additive manufacturing systems, robotics platforms, and welding
  • Ability to manufacture parts and fabricate prototypes
  • Experience with CNC machining and advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities
  • Experience with CAD / CAM and prototype development
  • Ability to manage multiple technical projects simultaneously
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Must be able to support and promote the University’s Mission

Nice To Haves

  • 2-3 years of experience in manufacturing, prototyping, applied engineering, or product development environments
  • Experience working with industry-sponsored engineering projects
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing, robotics, or automation
  • Experience supervising student assistants in laboratory or manufacturing environments
