About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer's role is to increase company profitability and improve employee working conditions by studying, recommending, and implementing changes to existing and new manufacturing processes. This involves coordinating with various departments to ensure smooth production, developing and coordinating plant and equipment layout improvements, and preparing the company for Just In Time manufacturing and Total Quality Control. The position also assists in developing standard costs, coordinating new product introductions, and researching operational opportunities for improvement to maintain competitiveness. The role requires advising management on potential problems and opportunities, working in compliance with TS16949 Standards, and participating in the engineering change process by designing/updating PFMEAs, reviewing operator instructions, and ensuring equipment readiness. The Manufacturing Engineer is accountable for specific Health & Safety responsibilities under OHSA and will participate in supporting Kaizen Team and GEAR activities. A regular presence on the production floor is expected to provide engineering support in areas of safety, ergonomics, methods improvement, and equipment fabrication. The role involves researching and reporting manufacturing problems for overall plant productivity improvement, including cost reductions and implementing corrective actions. Compliance with ISO 14001 and environmental guidelines is also a key aspect of the position.

Requirements

  • College Diploma or University Degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, OR Five years experience in a related field or discipline.
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing, processes, production reporting system and MRP.
  • Good knowledge of Government legislation in the areas of Health & Safety, Environment, Employment Standards, Fire Code, Canadian Standards Association, etc.
  • Good Technical Report writing abilities.
  • Excellent problem solving techniques and methods.
  • Ability to successfully interact with all levels of employees in the organization.
  • Computer skills in the area of spread sheets, databases, word processing, and C.A.D.

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate with Scheduling, Tooling and QC the proper timing of ECN's to minimize obsolete stock, and ensure production at required Engineering level.
  • Develop and co-ordinate plant and equipment layout improvements, process improvements, to prepare Company for Just In Time manufacturing and TQC (Total Quality Control).
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standard costs for all products.
  • Co-ordinate and follow up on the smooth introduction of new product to the company assist in selecting appropriate suppliers for subcontracted operations.
  • Research and pursue any potential operational opportunities for improvement in the Company's Operation to make the Company competitive in a JIT Manufacturing Environment.
  • Advise Management of any potential problems and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with any other projects as requested by the General Manager.
  • Work in compliance with TS16949 Standards.
  • Participates in the engineering change (ecn) process by designing / updating Process Failure Mode Effects Analyses (PFMEAs) as needed, reviewing all operators instructions, ensuring assembly equipment readiness, packaging requirements are met, and all other Process Engineering tasks are completed on the ECn Checklist before the change effective date.
  • Will work in compliance with all legislative requirements of the OHSA and will be accountable for specific Health & Safety responsibilities, as outlined under “Safety & Environmental Responsibilities – Office & Production Employees.
  • Participates in supporting Kaizen Team and GEAR activities.
  • Maintains regular daily presence on the production floor and provides engineering support to assembly in areas of safety, ergonomic evaluations, methods improvement, procurement and fabrication of necessary equipment to improve/complete any required process additions and/or alterations, and responding to their concerns/suggestions.
  • Consider all aspects of industrial plant engineering when designing and/or implementing process changes.
  • Research, investigate and report manufacturing problems/concerns for improvement of overall plant productivity including process cost reductions, monitoring and devising/ implementing corrective actions to minimize process downtimes and rejects.
  • Will maintain due diligence in regard to environmental matters, minimize any potentially harmful accidents and work in compliance with ISO 14001.
  • Will follow the environmental guidelines for aspects as outlined in the job training requirements.
