Manufacturing Engineer III

BLUE ORIGIN•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which provides manufacturing and supply-chain support across Blue Origin facilities. The position supports development and manufacturing of electromechanical ground support equipment and space-based energy systems. It applies mechanical and electrical engineering expertise to manufacture complex rotating machinery and power-conversion hardware from design intent through functional, qualified assemblies. The Manufacturing Engineer provides Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) feedback to design engineering, helping ensure product producibility and efficient assembly from early development. The role also defines end-to-end manufacturing process flows and evaluates, selects, and specifies production equipment for electromechanical hardware. It provides direct floor support and helps introduce new products through manufacturing plans, schedules, and tooling plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals, including motor construction, winding patterns, insulation systems, conductor termination, and high-voltage assembly practices.
  • At least 2 years of experience in manufacturing or production engineering, including internships.
  • Direct manufacturing experience with electric motors or similar rotating electrical machines, such as alternators, dynamometers, or traction motors.
  • Experience defining manufacturing process flows and selecting production equipment for electromechanical hardware.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, precision fits, bearing installation, rotor balancing, and structural assembly.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings (GD&T) and electrical drawings, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnect drawings.
  • Strong written, interpersonal, technical, and software skills, including CAD, issue-tracking tools, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience in an electric motor or rotating electrical machine manufacturing facility.
  • Experience with stator winding, rotor assembly, and final machine integration.
  • Experience establishing new production lines or manufacturing cells, including equipment procurement and layout.
  • Familiarity with rotor balancing, vibration analysis, and precision alignment of rotating assemblies.

Responsibilities

  • Translate engineering intent and drawings into functional electromechanical hardware ready for testing, qualification, and deployment by creating manufacturing bills of materials and work instructions.
  • Provide DFMA feedback throughout product development, influencing geometry, tolerances, material selection, and assembly sequences to improve manufacturability.
  • Define manufacturing process flows from raw material through final assembly and test, identifying critical-path operations and process interdependencies.
  • Evaluate, select, and specify manufacturing equipment, including winding machines, balancing equipment, CNC machinery, test stands, and specialized tooling.
  • Develop manufacturing processes for assemblies involving high-speed rotating components, stator/rotor integration, winding installation, insulation systems, and precision electrical-mechanical interfaces.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles such as tolerance stack-ups, fits, thermal management, structural assembly, and precision alignment alongside knowledge of motor and machine construction.
  • Provide shipside and lineside support for mechanical and electrical assembly operations on the manufacturing floor.
  • Generate, manage, and close non-conformance reports addressing mechanical dimensional conformance and electrical performance requirements.
  • Support new-product introduction by creating manufacturing plan artifacts, including build plans, duration estimates, production schedules, and tool lists.
