About The Position

Exponent is seeking a Managing Scientist in their Chemical Regulations & Food Safety Practice, based in Washington, DC. This role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to provide safety reviews, conduct health risk assessments, and manage projects for clients in the food and ingredient industries. The position offers opportunities for collaboration with other Exponent practice areas. The ideal candidate will manage pre-market approval projects (GRAS, FAP/CAP, NDIN, FCNs), offer strategic regulatory consulting for various food-related products, interact with clients and FDA regulators, prepare technical reports, oversee project budgets, and mentor junior scientists. The role emphasizes a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and inclusive work environment with a focus on employee development and well-being.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, nutrition, toxicology, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in food regulatory consulting
  • Strong background in Human Health Risk Assessment
  • Sound scientific principles, flexibility, and willingness to learn
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, adaptable, effective with time management, and capable of working independently and cooperatively in diverse teams
  • Strong ability to prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Exposure to sensitive information will necessitate considerable use of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and judgment
  • Willingness to learn and be creative
  • Presently legally authorized to work in the United States. No immigration sponsorship or processing required.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and organizing pre-market approval projects, such as GRAS, FAP/CAP, NDIN, and FCNs
  • Providing strategic regulatory consulting related to food additives/ingredients, novel foods, botanical ingredients, and dietary supplements
  • Interacting with clients and FDA regulators
  • Preparing complex technical reports
  • Project management and project budget oversight
  • Mentoring and developing Scientist and Senior Scientist career goals and working collaboratively across the various Exponent practices
