About The Position

The Managing Editor plays a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), a high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journal. This individual ensures timely, ethical, and accurate processing of manuscripts from submission through publication and maintains strong working relationships with authors, reviewers, editorial board members, and the publishing partner. The Managing Editor works closely with the Editor-in-Chief, deputy editors, and publisher to uphold editorial standards, implement journal policies, and support the journal’s strategic growth and reputation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Extensive project management experience required, with a track record of designing and implementing successful programs and initiatives in scholarly publishing.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience and skills to manage a variety of functions.
  • Requires considerable judgement to apply limited parameters and concepts to significant problems, opportunities, projects and situations in order to arrive at satisfactory outcomes.
  • Requires ability to create new and modify existing approaches in the context of established policies, guidelines, practices and philosophies.
  • Requires the ability to obtain consensus or approval while coordinating multiple demands.
  • Requires excellent command of medical terminology as well as good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors developments in scholarly publishing that may affect journal quality and reputation, and spearheads updates to journal policies and procedures to align with current best practice
  • Manages and tracks the manuscript workflow from submission to publication using an online submission system (e.g., Editorial Manager); ensures content deadlines are met.
  • Supervises the Associate Managing Editor, Editorial Coordinator, and 3 Editorial Assistants (2 of whom are part-time).
  • Interacts with the Journal Manager at Elsevier to facilitate journal production and solve production problems.
  • Collaborates with the Editor-in-Chief to prepare and manage editorial board meetings, communications, and initiatives.
  • Maintains journal style guide and Information for Authors; adapts existing workflows in response to updates in the journal’s manuscript handling software.
  • Manages budget, developing projections for new initiatives or to cover personnel changes, allocating resources and reviewing budget statements for accuracy, overseeing stipend payments to editors and billing of page charges to authors.
  • Designs and implements monthly, semi-annual, and annual reports to measure journal, editor, and staff performance metrics (e.g., submission volume, turnaround times, impact factor).
  • Implements editorial and publishing improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and author/reviewer experience.
  • Coordinates the development of special issues, supplements or invited content, including content arising from the NKF, supplements, and guidelines/guideline commentaries.
  • Collaborate with NKF’s Marketing and Communications team to promote journal content through social media, press releases, newsletters, and other media and organizational channels.
  • Work in collaboration with the Senior Vice President of Scientific Operations and the Chief Scientific Officer to support and manage the Editor-in-Chief and editorial board transition process at the start of each new term, ensuring continuity, transparency, and alignment with NKF governance and strategic goals.
