About The Position

Associated Electric Cooperative is seeking a Managing Director, Technology Enablement to lead a new function focused on unifying how technology is built across the organization. This role will own the full lifecycle of technology development, including architecture, developer tools, platforms for applications, data, and AI, and the underlying infrastructure. The goal is to enable technology builders to create solutions safely, sustainably, and productively, together. The position requires a strategic leader who can design and implement a unified approach to building technology, considering the unique needs of a utility business where critical systems must remain self-sufficient. The role reports to the Chief Information Officer and will lead existing teams and initiatives focused on this transformation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and relevant certifications.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in technology operations, security, infrastructure, or enterprise-scale technology environments, including experience leading through managers.
  • 7+ years of people leadership experience with full responsibility for direct reports.
  • Demonstrated success leading and improving 24/7 monitoring, incident response, and support capabilities across complex systems.
  • Proven experience leading high-stakes incident and crisis response, coordinating cross-functional teams, and restoring operations under pressure.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity, infrastructure, and enterprise systems, including networks, identity, hosting environments, and endpoint technologies.
  • Experience building and evolving operational systems and capabilities, including observability, automation, and incident management platforms.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to make decisions in ambiguous, time-sensitive situations and communicate clearly with technical teams, business leaders, and senior and executive leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Create the Foundation: Lead teams to develop shared technology foundations in areas like data products, enterprise apps, business apps, and enterprise integrations, making them compelling for teams to adopt.
  • Form the Architecture Function: Establish enterprise architecture with architects who act as registry keepers, tool-crafters, and consultants to guide teams.
  • Turn Data into Fuel: Build out the Data Intelligence region, transforming data from a byproduct into a fuel source through trustworthy data products, certified analytics users, and an AI-ready platform.
  • Modernize our Craft: Update the methods for building products, incorporating AI-integrated development, modern toolchains, a shared UI framework, and low/no-code capabilities.
  • Cloud-Power the Grid: Design a future for critical grid systems that delivers cloud-era engineering without cloud exposure, ensuring they remain operational independently.
  • Ride the Waves: Monitor emerging technologies, particularly AI, and proactively establish new technology regions to support future needs.
