About The Position

The Managing Director, Individual Giving is responsible for cultivating, stewarding, and managing a portfolio of individual donors in the New York region who are committed to ensuring equitable and excellent education for all children. This role is part of the Field Fundraising team and contributes to the long-term vision and strategy to achieve development goals. The position involves partnering with Executive Directors, regional advisory board members, and other fundraisers to maximize giving, with a focus on new donor strategy and acquisition over the next 3-5 years. Reporting to the SMD, Development, the individual will set the vision and strategies to raise $3 million or more from individual donors with the capacity to give $10,000 or more annually. The role requires developing and executing strategies to acquire, cultivate, retain, and diversify a portfolio of private donors.

Requirements

  • Highly skilled relationship builder, particularly with external prospects and donors.
  • Ability to build and execute comprehensive relationship management plans across a portfolio of donors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Specialization in best practices of development and fundraising.
  • Track record of successfully navigating complex philanthropic landscapes to reach revenue goals.
  • Experience stewarding a diverse portfolio of donors/funders from various funding streams, including grant writing and reporting.
  • Ability to leverage historical local development trends to set strategy and/or adjust course.
  • Ability to set vision and direction for a specific portfolio of local donors and independently execute on that strategy.
  • Ability to monitor progress against the portfolio to ensure continuous donor stewardship.
  • At least 7+ years of related experience in development and fundraising context.
  • Track record of meeting and exceeding ambitious goals as a donor portfolio manager.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, cultivate, steward, and solicit a portfolio of individual donors.
  • Plan and execute annual stewardship programs for individual donors at various levels, including mid-level and major giving circles.
  • Support the SMD and ED in managing the New York Board, including preparing for meetings, cultivating new members, and supporting their fundraising efforts.
  • Identify, pursue, and secure new funding to sustainably grow and diversify the individual giving fundraising stream.
  • Set vision, strategy, and plan for cultivating a portfolio of individual donors, incorporating input from leadership to maximize revenue.
  • Build relationships with local advisory board members and the NYC philanthropic community to advance fundraising efforts.
  • Plan and execute annual and multi-year individual giving fundraising campaigns.
  • Lead portfolio reviews, including moves management progress checks, to identify opportunities for pipeline and engagement strengthening.
  • Maintain donor, prospect, and fundraising activity information in the customer relationship management system (SalesForce) and leverage this data for tracking progress and adjusting strategy.
  • Partner with leadership and regional colleagues to understand TFA’s vision and strategic plan for impact in New York, and translate regional priorities into a focused case for support.
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives such as corps member selection and regional engagements like school visits and team meetings.
