About The Position

The Managerial ASL Interpreter supports Deaf managerial staff at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, particularly the principal and assistant principal. The role is structured to mitigate potential conflicts of interest when interpreting for the School Leader in conversations involving the school’s unions, including BTU members. The interpreter serves as the assistant principal’s primary interpreter and the principal’s secondary interpreter, providing effective, highly technical interpretation and transliteration in school and district settings. The position facilitates accurate communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing and hearing individuals while accounting for cultural and linguistic differences. Work includes translating and editing between ASL and English, and interpreting for school activities, meetings, training, presentations, and other events. The role requires confidentiality, adherence to interpreting ethics, continued skills development, and responsiveness to evolving accessibility practices and technology. The work schedule generally mirrors the assistant principal’s, from August 16 to June 28 each school year. The position requires frequent local travel and physical presence when the principal and assistant principal are working, which may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
