About The Position

This role is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, and standardization of all Blood Bank operations at Cape Cod Healthcare’s laboratories, ensuring services meet patient needs. The position also oversees all related operations of the Blood Donor Center/Program, focusing on marketing, service expansion, increasing collections, and decreasing costs associated with purchased blood. The Manager supervises the performance of various procedures related to blood typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, preparation and dispensing of blood products, and serologic testing. This includes ensuring accurate transcription of test data, maintaining quality control, and performing instrument troubleshooting and maintenance. The role involves planning, organizing, and providing services for assigned sections, creating employee schedules, ordering and controlling supplies, monitoring equipment, and coordinating quality control activities. A key aspect is evaluating the quality of work for accuracy and timely reporting. The Manager is responsible for all aspects of blood donation, including marketing, donor recruitment, and oversight of collection sites. Technical competency in the donor center is maintained to assist staff with health histories, physical exams, phlebotomy, preparing blood components and samples, and donor-related clerical functions. The position also involves making recommendations for process improvements, assisting pathologists with quality control and new methodologies, and reviewing donor paperwork. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for orienting new hires, overseeing staff training, evaluating work performance, and serving as a technical reference. Developing and maintaining Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Quality Improvement programs, along with ensuring compliance with CAP, AABB, and FDA standards, are critical. Maintaining confidentiality, fostering harmonious relationships, and pursuing professional growth are also key responsibilities. The role includes understanding departmental and Hospital policies, performing other assigned duties, ensuring customer satisfaction, participating in the Quality Assurance program, providing input to budgets, interviewing applicants, developing communication with staff and other personnel, conducting sectional meetings, and challenging working practices to identify process improvement opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in clinical laboratory sciences area or any related field
  • ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification
  • 5 years of related experience, preferably in a blood center
  • Knowledge of Regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively, analyze problems and implement appropriate solutions, and assimilate information quickly
  • Ability to work independently while developing functioning teams among staff
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to deal with all levels of staff, hospital personnel, physicians, volunteers and donors
  • Required to travel to Donor sites throughout the region
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Responsibilities

  • Assures the development, coordination, implementation and standardization of all policies, procedures, and practices of all Blood Bank operations.

  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential in conjunction with CCH HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
  • Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the departments' services and seeks to continually improve Customer Service satisfaction.
  • Participates in the Laboratory's Quality Assurance program.
  • Provides input to the operating and capital equipment expense budgets and strives to operate section within allocated budget.
  • Interviews applicants and make recommendations for hiring.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians and other hospital personnel.
  • Conducts monthly sectional meetings of staff and records minutes.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Challenges current working practices, identifies process improvement opportunities and presents recommendations and solutions to management.
