About The Position

CarGurus is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Autolist team within its Consumer Engineering organization. Autolist is a distinct marketplace brand and subsidiary of CarGurus. Its team builds consumer experiences supporting shoppers from vehicle research and discovery through evaluation and purchase, including mobile apps and the platform behind them. The role combines technical judgment, product thinking, and people leadership. The manager will shape technical direction, support engineers’ growth, collaborate closely with Product, UX, and Analytics, and guide delivery of high-quality software used by automotive shoppers. The team is evolving its engineering practices toward AI-enabled and increasingly agentic ways of working, and the manager will help apply those practices thoughtfully across design, development, testing, and operations. The ideal candidate is an engineering generalist who can engage in architecture and system design, understand consumer applications, and bring clarity to complex initiatives from concept to measurable outcomes. Mobile-app experience is a strong plus, including experience on one platform or close partnership with mobile teams; experience with both iOS and Android is not required. The role also values reasoning about consumer app experiences and platform choices as the product evolves.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of relevant software engineering experience, including at least 3 years as an engineering manager, technical lead, or in an equivalent engineering leadership role.
  • Experience leading and developing engineers who build and operate customer-facing software.
  • A generalist engineering background with technical depth in areas such as architecture, system design, APIs, distributed systems, data, testing, observability, and technical trade-offs.
  • Experience delivering consumer-facing products at scale, with a customer focus and a track record of shipping high-quality, user-centered experiences.
  • Experience with mobile applications or close partnership with mobile engineering teams.
  • Strong product judgment, quantitative and analytical problem-solving skills, and comfort using analytics, experimentation, and customer insights to make decisions and measure impact.
  • Enthusiasm for AI-enabled and agentic development, with the curiosity and leadership to help engineers adopt new tools and ways of working.
  • An ownership mindset and strong project and execution management skills, including the ability to drive development from concept to launch, create clarity, prioritize, and make progress in ambiguous environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach engineers and support their technical and professional growth.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to build trust across engineering, product, design, analytics, and partner teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Curiosity, empathy, sound judgment, and commitment to building inclusive teams and continuously improving.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading teams that build customer-centric mobile products.
  • Familiarity with iOS and/or Android platform design principles; experience with both platforms is not required.
  • Experience reasoning about consumer app experiences and platform choices, including potential platform-agnostic approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop software engineers, supporting their technical development, career growth, performance, and a collaborative, high-performing culture.
  • Set the team’s technical direction, balancing delivery with investment in architecture, reliability, scalability, and developer effectiveness.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Product, UX, and Analytics through ideation, development, experimentation, and launch; build consensus on strategy, priorities, and execution.
  • Help deliver intuitive, high-quality, customer-centric mobile and web products that improve the Autolist consumer shopping experience.
  • Clarify goals, break down complex initiatives, manage scope and dependencies, and promote incremental delivery and learning.
  • Champion AI-enabled engineering practices, including AI coding assistants, agentic workflows, and AI-driven tools, and help the team adopt them thoughtfully and responsibly.
  • Collaborate across Consumer, Dealer, and Platform Engineering on dependencies, integration requirements, and shared technical investments.
  • Work with Product Analytics to define and analyze success metrics, using data, customer feedback, A/B tests, and operational signals to guide decisions.
  • Partner with Product, UX, and Analytics to incorporate usability research, customer insights, and market analysis into technical requirements and product decisions.
  • Advocate for code quality, observability, reliability, security, testing, and continuous improvement in processes and tooling.
  • Contribute directly where it will have the greatest impact, such as technical design, experiment scoping, resolving cross-team dependencies, or unblocking delivery.

Benefits

  • Equity for all employees, at hiring and as they grow with the company.
  • Career development programs.
  • Corporate giving programs.
  • Employee resource groups (ERGs) and communities.
  • Flexible hybrid model.
