About The Position

Reporting directly to the President, the Manager, Safety and Training will be responsible for leading the organizations’ training team across both divisions and for developing and implementing a proactive safety program that delivers measurable results and meets all contractual obligations. The incumbent will demonstrate strong leadership to foster a safety-first culture, ensuring that safety principles are consistently promoted, communicated and upheld throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Administration and a minimum of ten (10) years of recent or relevant experience in urban transit or related.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in a managerial role in a transit system
  • Certified Professional Instructor in Bus Operator Education in Fleet Driver Trainer (P.R.I.D.E Certification) or THSAO Fleet Driver Trainer and Air Brake Instructor facilitator.
  • Certified Instructor in CUTA Transit Ambassador in Customer Service
  • Must possess or be able to obtain MTO signing authority under recognized authority program
  • Must possess sound judgement, excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, interpersonal, coaching/counselling, leadership and customer service skills.
  • Must have a valid BZ license with a minimum of 3 years’ experience and clean Driver’s Abstract and CVOR
  • Strong computer skills with a working understanding of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability as a strong and fast learner

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership in preventing personal injuries and vehicle accidents through the development, implementation and continuous improvement of a comprehensive safety and training program.
  • Develop, implement and monitor driver training programs to ensure full compliance with all applicable provincial regulations, Company policies and York Region Transit (YRT) requirements.
  • Ensures all employee training records are accurate, up to date and compliant with the provincial regulations and YRT standards.
  • Plan, develop and deliver monthly safety meetings, including topic selection, preparation of materials, presentation delivery, attendance tracking and follow up with absent employees.
  • Schedule and conduct road ride evaluations for all drivers in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements, providing coaching and corrective action where necessary.
  • Actively participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings by contributing to discussions, addressing safety concerns and ensuring required monthly workplace inspections are completed and documented.
  • Lead all accident and incident investigations, ensuring timely completion of reports, proper documentation, root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Provide post accident coaching and ensure prompt reporting to YRT.
  • Provide leadership, direction and mentorship to Training Supervisors by setting department goals and objectives, managing trainer schedules, standardizing training procedures, and facilitating regular trainer development meetings.
  • Develop, maintain and update safety communications, including bulletins, notices and visual displays to reinforce a strong safety culture.
  • Prepare and present periodic and ad hoc reports, including safety performance, metrics, trends, and departmental budget.
  • Identify, recommend and implement both short- and long-term safety improvements and cost saving initiatives aimed at reducing incidents and enhancing operational safety.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable legislation, industry best practices and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to WHMIS, AODA and YRT standards, ensuring all programs remain compliant.
  • Foster and maintain a respectful, inclusive and harassment free training and work environment, addressing concerns promptly and taking corrective action when required.
  • Facilitate new driver training programs, including in class instruction, practical training and administration of written and practical evaluations for licensing and renewals.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Ministry Approved Driver Certification Program (DCP), including adherence to all standards, documentation and audit requirements.
