About The Position

The Manager of People and Labor Relations is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Manager of People and Labor Relations is responsible for modeling Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation while promoting a fair and inclusive workplace culture. This role oversees the resolution of complex employee and labor relations issues and ensures outcomes align with Compassus values and compliance with labor laws. The Manager will lead the administration, interpretation, and negotiation of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), fostering productive relationships with labor unions. Additionally, this position is responsible for training leaders, managers, and HR professionals on CBA terms, implementation, and compliance. The Manager of People and Labor Relations will provide expert guidance to leadership, ensuring equitable treatment and fostering a collaborative and compliant work environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive Human Resources experience, including at least five (5) years of focused employee and labor relations experience.
  • Proven expertise in conducting workplace investigations and managing sensitive employee relations matters.
  • Extensive experience in CBA administration, interpretation, and collective bargaining negotiations, as well as delivering training programs on CBAs preferred.
  • Experience with union contract administration and responding to government agency claims (e.g., EEOC, NLRB) preferred.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Proficiency in calculating data metrics, rates, and percentages to analyze labor relations trends.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly to leaders, employees, union representatives, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English.
  • Articulates and embraces integrated healthcare at home philosophy.
  • Expertise in employment and labor laws (e.g., NLRA, FMLA, ADA).
  • Exceptional conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation skills.
  • Proficiency in case management and HRIS platforms, including Workday or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage union negotiations, navigate complex labor environments, and provide impactful CBA training.

  • PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct sensitive investigations related to employee concerns, workplace conflicts, ethics reports, and allegations of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.
  • Oversee labor relations processes, including collective bargaining agreement administration, interpretation, and negotiations, ensuring adherence to contract terms and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Act as the primary liaison with union representatives, addressing grievances, contract-related disputes, and labor-management collaboration.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to leaders, managers, and HR professionals on collective bargaining agreements, emphasizing contract compliance, key provisions, and effective implementation.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to leaders and HR professionals on complex labor relations matters, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Ensure Compassus maintains compliance with labor laws, union contracts, and internal policies, while proactively mitigating risks.
  • Prepare detailed investigation summaries, reports, and recommendations for internal stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Manage a team of labor relations specialists, providing ongoing feedback, development, and performance evaluations.
  • Maintain robust documentation and case management systems for investigations, grievances, and labor relations activities.
  • Partner with Legal Counsel and other departments on employee relations matters, including agency claims, mediations, and depositions as needed.
  • Collaborate on collective bargaining strategies and assist in union negotiations, including preparation for bargaining sessions, research, and documentation.
  • Analyze and report labor relations metrics to leadership, utilizing systems such as Workday and other case management platforms.
  • Drive change management initiatives by anticipating business needs and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
