About The Position

Manage, supervise and control the Ján Veizer Stable Isotope Laboratory, which is a highly specialized multi- disciplinary laboratory providing stable isotope analyses of H, C, N, O and S in biological, geological, hydrogeological, environmental and medical materials for University of Ottawa researchers (professors, visiting scientists, post-doctoral & graduate students) and the scientific community.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Earth, Environmental, Biological or Chemical Sciences with a focus on the analysis, use and/or applications of stable isotopes
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in managing a multi-disciplinary stable isotope facility.
  • Hands-on experience on multi-collector isotope mass spectrometry and related peripherals.
  • Laboratory experience in high vacuum cryogenic gas extraction line design and use.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite software.
  • Ability to understand the science and goals sought in various fields involving stable isotopes as well as the methods used in sample collection and preparation.
  • Solid background in electronic and computer programming, and data management, including, but not limited to, reporting of quality assurance and quality control metrics, and F.A.I.R. data principles.
  • First aid and Occupational Health training.
  • Bilingualism – English and French (spoken and written)

Responsibilities

  • Manage laboratory personnel and the various users with respect to laboratory and researchers’ time frames for optimization of the instruments’ usage.
  • Consult and advise users (professors, post-docs and students) on their respective projects re: proper sampling, analytical, instrumental, calibration and method limitations to obtain the best data possible.
  • Formulate, plan and develop innovations to increase the efficiency, productivity, accessibility and adaptability of the laboratory and its instrumentation including the development of new analytical capabilities relating to the varied research needs of the scientific community.
  • Maintain and report on progress, physical condition, finances and inventory of the facilities for statistical compilation, budget planning and grant applications, enabling long-term financial stability and providing competitive prices to our users.
  • Establish and enforce security and safety protocols regarding Occupational Health and Safety Codes to provide a safe and pleasant work environment.
  • Establish reporting of and enforce data quality control and assurance protocols.
  • Plan, formulate, update, implement and maintain all laboratory computers and computer-related issues (database, bilingual websites, network, backups…) to offer to users the latest instrumentation software on trouble-free secured computers and provide lab personnel with a protected and secured database for data manipulation and storage.
  • Supervise, instruct and demonstrate various geochemical analysis techniques to laboratory staff and perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on various samples for the users with respect to their projects.
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair existing equipment to keep the instruments in excellent working order to be able to provide the best possible service at the lowest possible price to the University of Ottawa research community.
  • Promote the University of Ottawa and the Ján Veizer Stable Isotope Laboratory inside and outside the University through training courses, talks, conferences, and the Lab brochure and website to attract new users/projects at the University and international levels.
