About The Position

The Manager, Grid Operations is responsible for the day-to-day management of the line and metering operations function, ensuring all work is completed safely and in an efficient manner. The incumbent organizes, prioritizes and directs the work activities for overhead, substation and underground electrical work. As a member of the Leadership Team (LT) the incumbent actively supports a ‘whole organization’ approach by putting sufficient focus on predicting and responding to customer needs, building an engaged employee culture, and continually seeking better solutions through productivity, technology and innovation. The incumbent manages resources to ensure work scope is achieved and aligned with budgets, project plans and capital plans. The incumbent ensures the team has the sufficient support and tools necessary to execute activities and acts as a liaison between various internal departments.

Requirements

  • Advanced capability to maintain focus during stressful situations, efficiently multi-task and derive solutions under pressure.
  • Advanced communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Intermediate problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Intermediate MS Word & Excel.
  • Intermediate ability to use business cost-benefit analysis in seeking efficiencies and improving business operations.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
  • Familiarity with OHSA legislation and related requirements.
  • Knowledge of labour relations and ability to apply the provisions of a collective agreement.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience as a Power Line Technician, Substation Electrician or similar background.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a related managerial or supervisory role.
  • Prior experience leading within a regulated work environment.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment, including interpreting and consistently applying the provisions of a collective agreement.
  • Prior experience with work planning, scheduling and inventory management.
  • Proven ability to create a safety focused work environment.
  • Ability to manage departmental budgets and related tracking.
  • Valid Class G license.

  • An equivalent combination of education, utility operations experience, leadership experience, and technical qualifications may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Support and direct Supervisors in the assignment of work, crew rotation and placements and equipment and resource optimization.
  • Ensure the VP Distribution Services is kept informed of emerging issues and progress on key work plans, critical business decisions, and the status of established goals & objectives.
  • Support and coach Supervisors in managing day-to-day employee and labour relations issues within the department and ensure resolutions are applied consistently and in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
  • Manage team time and resources allowing Supervisors sufficient time and opportunity to proactively manage employee performance, attend regular crew visits, mentor trades on safe work practices and keeping mind on task, and manage inventory effectively to increase tool-time.
  • Assist in the development of the Health & Safety strategy and plan execution.
  • In conjunction with the department lead, establish annual operational goals and objectives.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of operating and capital budgets; monitor spending and redirect work as required.
  • Work with other departments to create, schedule and execute the annual capital plan.
  • Review project plans and ensure proposed estimates and timelines are accurate, that resources are working to plan and budget.
  • Ensure materials are ordered within appropriate timeframes to avoid delays in work and establish minimum inventory levels.
  • Schedule and execute the annual maintenance/inspection plan.
  • Provide support and leadership to reactive and emergency response planning.
  • Lead outage response and restoration activities, ensuring timely mobilization of crews and resources, effective incident escalation, and clear communication with internal stakeholders, customers, and external agencies.
  • Conduct field safety audits, engage crews in dialogue relative to work being performed, monitoring crew and public safety protocols.
  • Assess and monitor Contractor performance to ensure the application and adherence to the Contractor Management Policies & Procedures.
  • Research, and put forward solutions to increase productivity, enhance worker effectiveness and support automation of processes.
  • Foster employee engagement and a positive work environment through leading by example, demonstrating positive competencies, and encouraging a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
