Manager, Front-End Engineering

JobberToronto, ON
CA$151,200 - CA$204,500Hybrid

About The Position

Jobber exists to help people in small businesses be successful. We work with small home service businesses, like your local plumbers, painters, and landscapers, to transform the way service is delivered through technology. With Jobber they can quote, schedule, invoice, and collect payments from their customers while providing an easy and professional customer experience. Running a small business today isn’t like it used to be—the way we consume and deliver service is changing rapidly, technology is evolving, and customers expect more. That’s why we put the power and flexibility in their hands to run their businesses how, where, and when they want! Our culture of transparency, inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation has been recognized by Great Place to Work, Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, and more. Jobber has also been named on the Globe and Mail’s Canada’s Top Growing Companies list, and Deloitte Canada’s Technology Fast 50™, Enterprise Fast 15, and Technology Fast 500™ lists. With an Executive team that has over thirty years of industry experience of leading the way, we’ve come a long way from our first customer in 2011—but we’ve just scratched the surface of what we want to accomplish for our customers. THE TEAM When it comes to telling the world about Jobber, Marketing is your department. They handle everything from spreading awareness and answering "What's Jobber?" to getting new customers in the door and turning those customers into Jobber advocates. The Web Strategy & Operations (WSO) team sits within Marketing and owns the strategy, execution, and continuous improvement of getjobber.com. THE ROLE The Manager, Front-End Engineering is a people-first leadership role for someone who brings both technical depth and a genuine passion for developing high-performing teams. You’ll lead the web development team as the primary technical partner to the Website Product Owner. You own technical execution and team development; while the Product Owner leads customer experience strategy and roadmap prioritization. You’ll also work closely with a design team to ensure that web experiences are delivered on time.

Requirements

  • Proven front-end engineering experience with proficiency in React, Next.js, and TypeScript
  • Hands-on WordPress experience — theme and plugin architecture, custom development, and CMS content workflows
  • Experience with Sanity CMS or a comparable headless CMS
  • Experience building client-side and feature-flag experiments
  • Strong back-end foundations and systems knowledge — enough to make sound architectural decisions and evaluate full-stack work
  • Experience managing or directing external development agencies or vendors, including quality review and standards-setting
  • Demonstrated experience leading and growing an engineering team, with a track record of coaching engineers at different career stages
  • Be a leader and mentor to your direct reports. Bring your own experience into conversations to influence, provide feedback and ensure individual goals are being met and exceeded.
  • Enough project management fluency to be a strong partner to a dedicated PM — including providing reliable effort estimates, identifying technical dependencies, and flagging delivery risk early
  • Experience introducing and scaling AI tooling within an engineering team — including tool evaluation, prompt engineering best practices, and responsible adoption
  • Comfort leading in and helping others adapt to an agile environment
  • Strong communication skills and comfort translating technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and marketing leadership
  • A collaborative, enabling mindset — you measure success by how well your team and its partners are able to do their work, not just by your own output

Responsibilities

  • Invest in your people. Hold regular 1:1s, set clear individual goals, and provide coaching and constructive feedback that drives both team performance and each person's career growth.
  • Build a world-class team. Establish standards for high-quality, scalable, and maintainable code. Create an environment where people are set up to do their best work and are consistently delivering against near-term team goals.
  • Champion AI-enabled development. Actively identify, evaluate, and roll out AI tools in your own day-to-day work and actively encourage your team to experiment with them. Help build a team culture where experimentation is celebrated – from code generation and review to documentation, testing, and deployment.
  • Be a mentor and coach. Understand each team member's strengths and career direction, and actively work to empower their growth through mentorship, stretch opportunities, and honest feedback.
  • Be a full-stack technical authority. Have a strong understanding of front-end systems — including WordPress, React/Next.js, TypeScript, and Sanity CMS — with strong back-end foundations that allow you to make sound architectural decisions and evaluate work across the full stack.
  • Lead by example. Plan projects, contribute code, and help set the technical bar for quality, performance, and maintainability across Jobber's web properties.
  • Own the platform migration. Play an active technical leadership role in our ongoing migration from WordPress to a headless Sanity CMS. This includes managing and quality-gating the work of an external development agency, ensuring the migration is executed to a high standard.
  • Build for scale. Establish engineering processes and documentation practices that enable the team to deliver reliably and reduce friction over time.
  • Be a true technical partner. You will be the technical layer that makes execution reliable — translating priorities and outcomes into sound technical plans, providing accurate effort estimates, and flagging complexity, risk, or dependencies early so the Website Product Owner can plan accordingly.
  • Bridge design and engineering. Build a tight working relationship with web designers to understand constraints, involve them early in technical decisions and make sure that implementation aligns with the design intent.
  • Be the technical voice. Protect the team's capacity and technical health. Surface trade-offs clearly and proactively — if something is harder than it looks, or if technical debt is slowing delivery, you're the one who raises it and proposes a path forward.
  • Collaborate across the organization. Work closely with Marketing, IT, and Product Engineering to support, provide guidance, and help execute on web initiatives across the business.
