About The Position

Axle Health is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead their Front-End and Mobile Engineering team. This role involves a blend of hands-on coding (developing web and mobile interfaces for clinicians, schedulers, and patients) and team management. The manager will report to the CTO and collaborate with product, design, and backend engineering to deliver high-quality software. The ideal candidate is a full-stack engineer with strong front-end and mobile expertise, beginning their management journey, who values code quality, design systems, and user experience, and can foster engineer growth within a dynamic startup environment.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
  • 6+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years in engineering management
  • Track record of successfully delivering complex technical projects on schedule in a high growth, fast paced, startup environment
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, GraphQL APIs, web services, and modern API development practices
  • Hands on development experience with React, Typescript, React Native or equivalent mobile framework, JavaScript, and Node
  • Excellent communication skills for explaining technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
  • Proven ability to evaluate, develop, and retain engineering talent
  • Working knowledge of data security and compliance requirements
  • Prior work with scheduling, logistics, workforce management, or business operations solutions

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with design systems or component library development
  • Experience with backend systems and frameworks such as Python and Django
  • Experience at a growth stage healthcare technology startup
  • Prior work with home healthcare, telehealth, or care coordination solutions
  • Familiarity with logistics optimization and scheduling systems
  • Strong understanding of healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7)
  • Experience managing and deploying applications with AWS

Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor engineers at various career stages while fostering a collaborative team culture
  • Build and scale the mobile and web application engineering teams
  • Track progress and coordinate delivery across concurrent initiatives
  • Partner with product and design to translate requirements into clean, well-scoped engineering plans
  • Spend the majority of your time as an individual contributor (writing, reviewing, and shipping code) while managing a small team of front-end and mobile engineers
  • Own code quality and performance standards across the web and mobile codebase
  • Ensure developer velocity by implementing and advocating for development process improvement across multiple technical workstreams
  • Contribute to front-end and mobile architecture decisions, ensuring code is scalable, maintainable, and consistent with team standards
  • Design and build systems that comply with healthcare data security standards and regulations (HIPAA, SOC-2, HITRUST, etc.)
