About The Position

Supports the Director, Corporate Affairs, with the development and execution of the Communications Strategic Plan, including integrated communication strategies, initiatives, and tactics in support of the WRPS Operations Plan. Helps drive communication excellence and innovation by supporting the design, delivery, and evaluation of internal and external communication programs.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of effective Corporate Communications and Media Relations strategies acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communications, Media Relations, Public Relations, or other related field.
  • Five (5) years relevant experience with internal and external Corporate Communications in multi-media channel environments required, ideally both public and private sector; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Three (3) years of experience managing and supervising staff (assigning work, providing feedback, etc.) is required; public sector experience in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Superior communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated expert-level writing experience for various communications mediums, including print, web, and marketing communications required.
  • Exceptional listening skills required; must be able to grasp and articulate complex situations and issues to synthesize information and develop appropriate actions.
  • Demonstrated resilience under pressure; comprehensive knowledge of crisis management from a communications perspective required.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills required to conduct data analysis, formulate recommendations, and plan and prepare budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience with change management methodologies, tools and frameworks, and a strong drive for innovation and efficiency to support strategic team objectives; strong influencing and negotiating skills required.
  • Strong self-starter with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and re-adjust priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship management skills; ability to work effectively with all levels of the Service and external parties.
  • A valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License with no more than six (6) demerit points is required to travel within the Region.
  • Able to meet police security clearance requirements and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to participate as an effective team member and to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Able to meet testing/portfolio requirements for the position.
  • Able to manage multi-faceted, competing priorities, ensuring deadlines and budgetary requirements are met.

Responsibilities

  • Providing strategic and operational leadership through a positive, proactive, engaging, and people‑first leadership style, achieved through effective coaching, advising, mentoring, communicating, and educating employees within the team.
  • Establishing performance criteria, conducting employee performance evaluations, and reviewing the overall performance of the team.

  • Supporting the Director, Corporate Affairs, with the execution of the Corporate Communications and Media Relations mandate and role within the Service; aligning team structures and internal skill sets with the mandate; and identifying services the Communications Team can provide to the Service.
  • Supporting the Director, Corporate Affairs, with the development of an overall communication strategy and setting team objectives and priorities.
  • Supporting the Director, Corporate Affairs, with the development of long‑term and short‑term communication strategies, policies, and systems, facilitating effective communications plans.
  • Supporting with identifying opportunities to implement new, creative, and innovative initiatives and improved communications and engagement practices.
  • Developing and executing communications with an emphasis on best practice protocols, policies and procedures for the effective dissemination of information, in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations, and/or police practices.
  • Providing research‑based advice on policy, procedure, and process issues, including internal communication plans, public relations strategies, social media campaigns, and all other communications initiatives.
  • Supporting the Director, Corporate Affairs, with internal and external communications.
  • Assisting with crisis communications planning and response through research on effective crisis management strategies.
  • Supporting a variety of timely and accessible communications for internal and external audiences, including strategic corporate publications, web/social media campaigns, public notices, banner postings, etc.
  • Supporting the fostering of a positive external perception of the Service and its brand through transparency, engagement, and responsiveness with key external stakeholders, primarily through media and community group engagements.
  • Supporting with gathering communications metrics, data analysis, preparing operational progress reports, and identifying issues requiring redress.
  • Identifying issues with potential to impact communications projects and initiatives; developing and recommending solutions or strategies to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Assisting the Director, Corporate Affairs, with budget preparation by researching and providing information and recommendations on projected expenditures.
  • Supporting with monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of the Communications Strategic Plan and WRPS Community Engagement initiatives against quantifiable, measurable goals set by the Director.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
