About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Policy, the Manager, Communications provides strategic, professional and technical direction to promote the programs and services of the Department of Culture and Heritage to a widely diverse public. The Manager plays a key role in ensuring that Nunavummiut understand the policies, programs, and legislation the department administers and oversees. In so doing, the incumbent must ensure that communication activities are of high quality and are implemented in a way that supports the government’s corporate priorities, goals and objectives. The Manager must identify emerging issues and trends and ensure that Culture and Heritage has an effective and comprehensive communications response. The position provides communication, planning, advice, preparation of communications/issue Management plans for the department.

Requirements

  • A recognized bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, advertising, or journalism.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a related field.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • A diploma in Inuit studies, or a social science.
  • Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages (Inuktut, English, French).
  • Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut.
  • Experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and analyzing departmental communication plans and activities and providing timely advice to improve messaging.
  • Providing advice and recommendations to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Assistant Deputy Minister on any current media issues.
  • Developing communication materials including website content, Ministerial Statements, press releases, internal newsletters, and plain language documents.
  • Managing approval of responses to media inquiries.
  • Finalizing all publications developed by the department.
  • Providing leadership in the creation of promotional products to all divisions of the department.
