About The Position

Fasken’s Business Development team is seeking an experienced and commercially minded professional to lead the business development function for the Global Energy and Climate Group and the Global Mining Group. As a recognized global leader in the resources sector, Fasken offers a unique opportunity to play a central role in shaping the growth of two strategic and high-profile groups that are core to the firm’s business. This is a highly visible, partner facing role requiring a hands-on leader who can operate at both a strategic and executional level. The Business Development Manager will work closely with lawyers and group leadership across the firm’s international offices to design and drive integrated business development strategies, deepen key client relationships, and identify new opportunities aligned with evolving market dynamics across energy, climate, and mining. The successful candidate will bring strong judgment, initiative, and a results-oriented mindset, delivering impactful programs across client development, profiling, and market engagement, ranging from strategic campaigns and cross-practice initiatives to targeted events, sponsorships, and thought leadership. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Development, this role works collaboratively across the Business Development, Marketing, and Communications teams, and is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, professionalism, and accountability consistent with a leading global law firm.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience (law firm or professional services environment preferred)
  • Experience working in complex, matrixed organizations with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of business development strategy, market research and competitive intelligence, and pitch and RFP processes
  • Proven ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills
  • Results-driven mindset with strong project management capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Develop the annual business plan for the two groups with input from key group members and drive the strategy forward throughout the year.
  • Identify and evaluate new business pipelines and targets for BD opportunities.
  • Driving strategic account management teams focused on key clients within the designated sectors.
  • Develop strategies and identify opportunities and to promote the practice, increasing its visibility and dominant position in the market.
  • Provide strategic input / collaborate on RFPs and pitches with lawyers, Pricing and Innovation teams, and proposal writers.
  • Leverage next gen CRM platform to track opportunities.
  • Facilitate cross selling initiatives with other firm practice groups.
  • Support lawyers to prepare them for business development meetings/trips with prospects, including identification of client targets/prospects, preparing appropriate collateral, as well as client and market intelligence.
  • Lead the rankings submission strategy for the groups.
  • Manage & provide up-to-date marketing collateral and go-to-market solutions, in consultation with relevant team members.
  • Work closely with content strategist on implementation of the social media strategy and identifying opportunities for thought leadership.
  • Stay abreast of key industries, maintain a strong knowledge of key clients and market forces, including business trends and competitive landscape.
  • Develop and manage the firmwide business development budgets, oversee expenses and approvals, ensure timely reconciliations.
  • Track and provide monthly updates detailing business development activity and successes (win/loss ratios, referrals, return on networking investments, upcoming activities).
  • Work with multiple internal stakeholders to assess timelines and track progress of key initiatives, reporting back regularly to group leadership.
  • Possibility of overseeing 1-2 direct reports through coaching, mentoring, delegation, and supervision.
