About The Position

The Management Intern will work with the Mayor, Mayor’s Assistant, and Chief of Staff for the Tempe City Council to assist in administrative office work including constituent responses, writing letters and proclamations, and various projects for the Office. This is a 20-hour per week position, and may include some nights and weekends, with flexible days and hours based on candidate and employer needs. This Internship program is a short term-position of a 12-month experience or less. An additional one-year extension may be offered contingent upon an annual review. Candidate is required to be enrolled in a Graduate Program during the duration of employment and continuation of employment will be based on the candidate’s enrollment in a Graduate Program. Candidates selected to move forward in the recruitment process will be required to complete a writing assessment. Writing submissions will be evaluated based on tone, grammar, professionalism, engagement with the prompt, and overall writing quality.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and two-years (2) experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Candidate is required to be enrolled in a Graduate Program during the duration of employment and continuation of employment will be based on the candidate’s enrollment in a Graduate Program.
  • Writing submissions will be evaluated based on tone, grammar, professionalism, engagement with the prompt, and overall writing quality.

  • Graduate Student in a closely related field of study.
  • Seeking, or has obtained, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Business Administration, or degree related to the core functions of this position.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship management skills.
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to tackle multiple projects at once, and meet deadlines.
  • Preferred knowledge of computer programs for tracking, budgeting, and reporting, such as Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • To actively support and uphold the City’s stated mission and values.
  • Communicate regularly with Mayor’s Assistant and Chief of Staff on priorities, projects, and responsibilities.
  • Assist in the writing and development of letters, memos, and proclamations.
  • Manage meeting requests and event invitations and respond accordingly.
  • Attend weekly Mayor’s Office and City Council Staff meetings.
  • Compile research, maintain records, generate reports, and update contact lists.
  • Work with various City Departments to meet mutual needs.

Benefits

  • The salary is $20.00 per hour.
