About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Manager is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts of $1,000 or more from current and prospective donors. This position focuses on strengthening relationships with existing donors, moving mid-level donors into the major gift pipeline, identifying new funding opportunities, and helping achieve annual fundraising goals. The Major Gifts Manager works collaboratively with the Development team to implement a comprehensive development strategy that includes donor research, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and accurate donor record management. This position also supports strategic fundraising initiatives, including capital and endowment campaigns, special events, donor engagement efforts, and other activities that advance the mission and long-term sustainability of The Salvation Army.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field preferred.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in major gift fundraising, including experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual, corporate, and foundation donors and prospects.
  • Experience using donor databases, CRM systems, wealth screening tools, and moves management strategies preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward at least 200 major gift donors and prospects annually using moves management strategies and tools.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, with a focus on building meaningful donor relationships and securing increased philanthropic support.
  • Move qualified mid-level donors into the major gift pipeline through strategic engagement, personalized communication, and timely solicitation.
  • Accompany Advisory Board/Council members, volunteers, and staff on visits with donors and prospects as appropriate.
  • Monitor donor and prospect contacts to ensure positive, purposeful, and mission-focused donor relations.
  • Prepare solicitation materials, proposals, correspondence, briefing documents, and other materials as needed for individual, corporate, and private foundation prospects.
  • Utilize donor management systems, wealth screening tools, and other resources to research, track, cultivate, and solicit donors and prospects.
  • Update, track, and maintain contact reports, solicitation reports, donor notes, and activity records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with staff to identify and assign donor prospects for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with the Divisional Resource Development Director and Planned Giving Director by sharing appropriate information that may enhance the overall effectiveness of Area Command fundraising efforts.
  • Participate actively in capital and endowment campaigns as requested, including campaign planning, donor cultivation, solicitation support, execution, and follow-up.
  • Utilize Interchange, The Salvation Army’s Constituent Relationship Management software, to maintain accurate and timely donor records.
  • Document donor visits, phone calls, emails, solicitations, stewardship activities, and other meaningful contacts in the CRM.
  • Track donor movement, cultivation steps, proposals, pledges, and follow-up actions to support effective moves management.
  • Ensure all capital campaign files, donor records, and related documentation are accurate, organized, complete, and maintained in compliance with established quality standards.
  • Use CRM data and reports to help evaluate donor activity, portfolio performance, and progress toward fundraising goals.
  • Partner with fundraising staff to encourage and enhance donor engagement for the Area Command.
  • Participate in donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship efforts connected to special events, tours, meetings, and recognition opportunities.
  • Encourage donor and prospect attendance at recognition events, cultivation gatherings, program visits, and other engagement activities.
  • Ensure recognition and stewardship efforts are thoughtfully integrated into solicitation strategies.
  • Acknowledge major donors through appropriate public and private recognition, including annual reports, awards, acknowledgments, personal correspondence, and other stewardship activities.
  • Review fundraising periodicals, community news, donor research resources, and related publications to identify new prospects and funding opportunities.
  • Handle special projects related to stewardship, including special correspondence, historical fund reports, donor testimonials, recognition pieces, and other relationship-building materials.
  • Provide direct and active support to the Area Command’s Events Coordinator with planning, preparation, logistics, execution, donor hosting, and follow-up for major events and activities hosted by the command.
  • Develop relationships with individuals, businesses, community leaders, civic groups, churches, and other organizations to enhance awareness of and support for The Salvation Army programs.
  • Represent The Salvation Army through public speaking, community presentations, donor meetings, tours, and other outreach opportunities.
  • Assist as needed with community efforts and seasonal programs, including Angel Tree assignments and related activities.
  • Attend assigned meetings that support the promotion, advancement, and effectiveness of Area Command development operations.
  • Participate as a collaborative member of the Development team, supporting departmental goals and assisting with administrative tasks necessary for smooth operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and work of The Salvation Army.
