About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan that believes education is key to creating opportunities. ESH’s facilities and maintenance services align with this mission by ensuring safe, clean, and operational environments across community centers, schools, and administrative buildings. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair duties to support the functionality and cleanliness of ESH facilities. The Maintenance Worker will address work orders, conduct routine inspections, and provide timely responses to building needs. As a member of the Facilities team, the Maintenance Worker is expected to contribute to a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment across all assigned sites. This position does not supervise others but interacts with staff across departments and may travel between multiple sites as needed. With a focus on safety, efficiency, and upkeep, the Maintenance Worker provides facility support and repair services essential to site functionality and operational outcomes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the maintenance field
  • Demonstrated experience with hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of general maintenance practices
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot minor facility issues
  • Physical strength and endurance
  • Time management and organization
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor electrical repairs.
  • Conduct daily inspections of building systems and infrastructure.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and complete work orders in a timely manner.
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of facilities, including common areas, restrooms, and exterior grounds.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Monitor inventory of tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
  • Lift and move heavy equipment and materials (up to 50 pounds).
  • Travel between multiple ESH locations in varying weather conditions.
  • Support setup and breakdown of rooms for meetings or special events.
  • Report safety hazards or major repair needs to supervisor.
