About The Position

The City of Monterey Park is now hiring for the part-time position of Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department. The current vacancy is in the Facilities Division. Under general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the part-time Maintenance Worker is responsible for conducting routine maintenance activities ranging from building maintenance, repair, and improvement projects at facilities around the city. The position works a flexible schedule, up to 20 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED is required.
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools
  • Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn multiple building trades
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions
  • Good customer service and communication skills

  • Knowledge of basic methods, operating equipment, materials, hand tools, power tools and equipment pertaining to street construction, landscape, facilities, and water maintenance; safe work practices.

  • Ability to perform semi-skilled duties
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Possession of a valid CA driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required at the time of appointment and is a condition of continued employment.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance work, ground, or park maintenance, or related labor or semi-skilled work is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic maintenance tasks, including painting, patching walls, replacing ceiling tiles, and making minor carpentry repairs
  • Assists with plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, unclogging drains, and repairing toilets
  • Assists with basic electrical maintenance, including replacing lamps, ballasts, switches, outlets, and lighting fixtures under the direction of qualified staff
  • Performs preventative maintenance on building equipment and facilities as assigned
  • Performs routine inspections of City buildings and reports maintenance deficiencies or safety hazards
  • Cleans work areas and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles in a safe and orderly condition
  • Loads, unloads, and transports maintenance materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Responds to routine maintenance work orders in a timely and professional manner
  • Follows established safety procedures and properly uses personal protective equipment
  • Maintains courteous and professional interactions with City staff, contractors, and the general public
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
