About The Position

The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie, an organization dedicated to caring for children in the Hudson Valley for over 175 years, is seeking a Maintenance Worker to join its Operations Department. This full-time position is responsible for performing basic maintenance tasks across all agency facilities and ensuring that the facilities and grounds comply with all health and safety guidelines. The role involves operating various agency vehicles, including cars, minivans, and pick-ups, for tasks such as fueling, routine maintenance appointments, and deliveries. The Maintenance Worker will also operate lawn maintenance equipment, including zero-turn mowers, and snow removal equipment like snow plows, sander-equipped vehicles, and snow blowers during winter months. Additional duties include assisting with moving residential and office furniture, and supporting the kitchen staff with food service delivery tasks. The individual is expected to perform routine tasks with minimal direct supervision, assess assigned tasks to determine necessary resources (staff or contractors), and identify and report necessary repairs to the Buildings & Grounds Supervisor. The use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is required for various tasks, and the role may necessitate working outside of normal business hours for time-sensitive duties like snow removal.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid NYS Driver License in good standing as determined by the Agency
  • Must complete and pass a pre-employment physical, PPD and drug screen and an annual physical and PPD

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of experience working in a congregate care setting.
  • Higher education and/or trade or technical school.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all agency vehicles including cars, minivans and pick ups for various tasks including filling gas tanks, routine maintenance appointments, deliveries etc.
  • Operates in a skilled manner all lawn maintenance equipment including zero turn mowers.
  • Operates snow plow and sander equipped vehicles as needed during winter months to clear agency property of snow and ice.
  • During winter weather, operates snow blowers to maintain clear walkways at agency facilities.
  • Assists in moving residential furnishings as well as office furniture.
  • Assist in the food service delivery tasks of the kitchen staff.
  • Performs routine tasks with little or no direct supervision.
  • Responsible for assessing tasks assigned and determining level and type of resources, staff or contractor needed to satisfactorily complete the task.
  • Identifies necessary repairs and informs the Buildings & Grounds Supervisor.
  • Uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as required for various tasks.
  • May be required to come in early or stay after normal working hours to perform snow removal or other time-sensitive duties.
