About The Position

Positions in this classification work under the supervision of the Operations Manager and perform general duties that are necessary to maintain, repair, operate, and install basic infrastructure in public works and parks systems. Incumbents must have a general working knowledge of a wide variety of maintenance tasks and are called upon to complete small construction projects as well as routine maintenance programs. Positions in this classification use and maintain a variety of city owned equipment including back hoes, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, mowers, and snow removal equipment. Work is conducted mostly out of doors and incumbents are frequently exposed to inclement weather conditions, traffic, hazardous chemicals and potentially dangerous equipment. Positions are subject to call-out for snow removal or emergency response. Maintenance Workers may be at times be required to carry a two-way pager and may be assigned to 24-hour stand-by.

Requirements

  • General working knowledge of a wide variety of maintenance tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics and maintenance and construction equipment is desirable.
  • Washington State Driver’s License (Commercial Class B)
  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR Certification
  • State Flagging Certification within Six months.

Nice To Haves

  • May be required to obtain Grade I Certification in Water Distribution Management, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain City owned sprinkler systems and components.
  • Repair and maintain ball fields, picnic areas, tables, benches and rest rooms as required.
  • Perform necessary landscaping as required for appearance and upkeep.
  • Operate and maintain mowers, back hoes, dump trucks, graders, snow removal equipment and other City owned machinery.
  • Operate equipment and perform work according to established safety standards and departmental procedures.
  • Install, repair and maintain City water and sewer mains, maintain and repair various pumps, and remove, repair and replace water meters as needed.
  • Read and record water consumption on a monthly basis.
  • Take regular water quality samples.
  • Maintain and repair streets and storm drain systems through patching, grading, installation of dry wells and drainage systems.
  • Construct new streets, storm drainage facilities and utility lines.
  • Conduct routine repairs to vehicles, machines and equipment.
  • Fertilize parks grounds and use chemicals to control weeds and pests.
  • Provide snow removal in the winter.
  • May work with other departments when authorized.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the City Manager.
