About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey level semi-skilled and manual labor tasks in the maintenance of streets, right-of-ways and trees. This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series, performing more highly skilled maintenance duties than the entry level Maintenance Worker I. Work is performed under general supervision and this classification is distinguished from the higher level Maintenance Leadworker by the absence of supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent; AND two (2) years of streets or related general construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Must be able to obtain a California Class B Driver’s License within nine (9) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures and standards governing area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of stormwater systems, construction, tree maintenance, repair and safety practices including equipment related maintenance.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of street construction, maintenance, repair and safety practices including equipment related maintenance.
  • Knowledge of State and federal environmental protection codes and regulations; Cal OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
  • Skill in using and operating hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and heavy duty construction equipment required to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Skill in performing basic carpentry, concrete and welding duties.
  • Skill in reading engineering drawings or blueprints.
  • Skill in safe shoring and trenching practices.
  • Skill in identifying unsafe conditions and taking corrective action.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and assessing problems and determining most effective method of repair.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with others.
  • Skill in verbal and written communications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares road base to proper compaction and places asphalt per Greenbook Standards.
  • Performs emergency repairs and maintains stormwater collection systems including catch basins, manholes and structures.
  • Performs stormwater collection system assistance.
  • Repairs sidewalks and driveways and finishes concrete as required.
  • Operates trucks and heavy duty construction and maintenance equipment as necessary to complete work projects; checks equipment for proper servicing, operation and safety and reports defects to supervisor; maintains inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities.
  • Maintains records related to particular area of assignment; may input and recall information into a computer terminal.
  • Responds to questions from the public regarding status of repairs.
  • Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices; supports and actively participates in the City’s safety programs.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Responds to emergency calls within specified time when participating in the emergency standby program.
