About The Position

Performs a variety of skilled maintenance duties and repairs on equipment and facilities, and general construction work, such as: maintenance and techniques in plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor electrical work. This role involves patching streets with asphalt, performing rough concrete work for curbs and gutters, picking up trash and debris, operating various light and medium duty equipment, cleaning sewer lines and storm drains, and ensuring compliance with safe working policies. The position also requires assisting other crews, trimming trees, clearing brush, running electrical cable, moving furniture, and setting up facilities for meetings and events. The employee will operate a city vehicle and must be available on a 24/7 basis, including participating in an after-hours call-out rotation which may include weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to High School Diploma or GED.
  • One-year (1) of experience as a Maintenance Worker I or two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction and maintenance work or any combination of training and/or experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a Public Works maintenance program.
  • Knowledge of uses of basic hand and power tools; basic construction and maintenance materials, methods, and terminology; basic safety considerations of work.
  • Knowledge of operational characteristics of equipment used in street maintenance.
  • Knowledge of City codes with respect to the repair and installation of equipment in the public right-of-way.
  • Knowledge of the proper care and handling of materials and equipment used in public works maintenance.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance methods and techniques in the areas of plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor electrical work.
  • Knowledge of building materials used in public works maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the City’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of providing quality customer service to City staff and members of the public.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform maintenance repairs and construction-related tasks.
  • Ability to perform thoroughly skilled maintenance duties in assigned area including installation street signs, street repair, and traffic control.
  • Ability to determine the amount/quantities of materials needed for repair work.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries, complaints, and requests for service in a fair, tactful, and firm manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain availability on a 24/7 basis as determined by supervisor or manager.
  • Ability to determine and use a wide variety of tools and equipment used in public works construction.
  • Ability to operate light and medium duty equipment such as skip loader, backhoe, and trucks.
  • Ability to use jack hammer, paint compressor, chippers, and sewer machine etc.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a California Class C driver’s license by the time of appointment.
  • Ability to acquire a California Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License by the end of probationary period depending on the type of equipment used.

Responsibilities

  • Performs template painting of traffic regulator signs, symbols, zone and other curb and street markings.
  • Installs or replaces street signs; installs poled and V channels.
  • Patches streets with asphalt; loads asphalt and delivers to job site; performs rough concrete work for curbs and gutters.
  • Pick up trash and debris from city facilities; remove fallen tree branches and palm fronds from streets.
  • Collects trash daily and places debris in garbage dumpsters.
  • Operates a variety of light and medium duty equipment; cleans and cares for tools and equipment; performs minor maintenance work on equipment and facilities.
  • Assists other division crews and departments as needed; trims trees; clears brush; runs electrical cable; moves furniture and equipment.
  • Cleans sewer lines with rodding machine; flushes line with water; cleans storm drains and gutters.
  • Ensures compliance with the City’s safe working policies and conditions.
  • Cleans work areas to maintain a safe working environment daily.
  • Assists in setting up facilities for meetings and other events including City Council meetings as needed.
  • Operates a city vehicle and is responsible for its safe operation and reporting any observed maintenance needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
