About The Position

This position performs work in maintaining and repairing sidewalks, tree trimming, street repairs, concrete work and other public services projects. Works in the repair and construction of underground utilities, appurtenances and utility projects. This position works under general supervision according to procedures/processes. In some cases, the worker may determine how to complete tasks. This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply. Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Florida Driver’s Permit with an air brake endorsement within three (3) months of hire; obtains Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's License within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100 and IS700 within six (6) months of employment.
  • Obtain a Maintenance of Traffic Certification as scheduled by Supervisor.
  • In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties related to the enhancement, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of assigned area.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance, receives and responds to repair work orders, and completes records regarding work performed.
  • Depending on assigned area, may assist or perform skilled work in one or more of the following: carpentry; minor electrical; plumbing; HVAC, electronics; painting; masonry; concrete; paving, and welding.
  • Drives and maintains vehicles, operates heavy equipment, and/or uses small power tools depending on assigned area.
  • May perform any of the following depending on assigned area: performs general grounds keeping in the maintenance of the exterior of assigned City facilities (including lift stations/parks/ ball fields/play grounds) and properties including, but not limited to, mowing grass, trimming trees and shrubs, installing landscape materials, and removing weeds and debris; assists with clean-up operations after hurricanes and other inclement weather; performs custodial work including, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, buffing and waxing floors, cleaning carpets, cleaning restrooms and offices, cleaning glass surfaces, and removing trash; sets up meeting rooms and facilities for events; may lock/unlock facilities and arm/disarm alarm systems; changes light bulbs; sweeps streets; obtains water samples; puts up signs; handles traffic flow; and/or collects and disposes of trash/refuse.
  • Transports materials and equipment to/from work sites; makes deliveries; and runs other errands as assigned.
  • Properly uses equipment and tools, follows safety practices (including personal protective equipment when required), and is continuously aware of occupational hazards during the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of safety and quality.
  • Ensures the timely completion of all assignments; and provides courteous and prompt customer service.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports as required or requested.
  • May perform some clerical tasks such as answering phones, getting mail, etc.
  • Attends training, meetings, and workshops as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Required to be placed on the on-call rotation after completion of probationary period.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
