About The Position

Under immediate or general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of basic maintenance, janitorial, or landscaping duties within one of the City's Maintenance Divisions. This role involves routine labor, basic repair and construction, grounds maintenance, and general building cleaning. Work is completed by following clear written instructions and/or supervision, with more routine assignments requiring general supervision and more skilled duties performed in a training capacity under close supervision. The Public Works Department has openings for 2 temporary Maintenance Worker I positions in the Stormwater/Wastewater Operations Work Unit. This position requires a CDL (minimum Class B, Class A preferred) and is anticipated to start on June 1, 2026, lasting no more than 9 months.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work as a member of a crew.
  • Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.
  • One year's general work experience.
  • Requires a Class B CDL (Class A preferred).

Nice To Haves

  • Background in drinking water, stormwater, wastewater, signs & markings, or streets preferred.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.

  • Adaptable to changing work environments.
  • Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property.
  • Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities.
  • Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment.
  • Assist with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.
  • Drive pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper.
  • Assist with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs.
  • Assist in digging ditches and laying sewer/water/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and maintenance hole and pavement repairs.
  • Maintain punctual, regular and reliable attendance for successful job performance.
