About The Position

The Maintenance Worker I/II is a journey-level position within the Public Works Department, responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repair duties across specialized crews, including street maintenance, concrete repair, and graffiti removal. Working under general supervision, the incumbent operates a wide array of tools and mechanical equipment, completes assigned tasks with minimal oversight, and may provide functional guidance to lower-level staff. This role plays a key part in maintaining the City’s infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, and storm drains, through hands-on work such as asphalt patching, concrete finishing, and graffiti abatement. While not responsible for supervising crews, the Maintenance Worker I/II is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and a strong commitment to public service and safety.

Requirements

  • One year (for level I) or two years (for level II) of experience in public works-related construction or maintenance.
  • A valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B driver's license with the necessary endorsements.
  • Proficiency in semi-skilled and skilled tasks, including street and sidewalk maintenance, graffiti removal, and the operation of various maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Effective communication.
  • Physical stamina for outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
  • A Class B driver's license with Air Brakes, Passenger, and Tanker Endorsements is required before the conclusion of the probationary period (for MWI).
  • A Class B driver's license is required (for MWII).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous City or Public Sector experience is highly desirable.

Benefits

  • 2% base salary increase is scheduled to take effect in the first full pay period beginning after July 1, 2026.
