About The Position

The Maintenance Worker I/II is a journey-level position within the Public Works Department, responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repair duties across specialized crews, including street maintenance, concrete repair, and graffiti removal. Working under general supervision, the incumbent operates a wide array of tools and mechanical equipment, completes assigned tasks with minimal oversight, and may provide functional guidance to lower-level staff. This role plays a key part in maintaining the City’s infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, and storm drains, through hands-on work such as asphalt patching, concrete finishing, and graffiti abatement. While not responsible for supervising crews, the Maintenance Worker I/II is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and a strong commitment to public service and safety.

Requirements

One year (for level I) or two years (for level II) of experience in public works-related construction or maintenance.
A valid California driver's license.
Ability to obtain a Class B driver's license with the necessary endorsements.
Proficiency in semi-skilled and skilled tasks, including street and sidewalk maintenance, graffiti removal, and the operation of various maintenance and construction equipment.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Effective communication.
Physical stamina for outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent.
Ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
A Class B driver's license with Air Brakes, Passenger, and Tanker Endorsements is required before the conclusion of the probationary period (for MWI).
A Class B driver's license is required (for MWII).

Previous City or Public Sector experience is highly desirable.
