About The Position

This role involves performing specialized and varied technical maintenance work related to building and grounds, fleet, drainage, and/or transportation activities. The position also includes assisting with customer service issues and service requests on campus and in the community, and performing special projects as necessary. The Maintenance Worker I/II will implement procedures, ensure compliance with City standards, and respond to emergency situations. Specific duties vary depending on the assignment, which can be in Building, Grounds and Fleet; Drainage; or Transportation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance.
  • Ability to gain certification and training in various specialized maintenance, construction and emergency tools and procedures as required by OSHA and needed by the organization.
  • Two years of responsible entry-level experience related to public works maintenance in the assigned area (for Maintenance Worker II).
  • Additional training in area of specialty is desirable (for Maintenance Worker II).

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance duties related to building, grounds, fleet, drainage, and/or transportation.
  • Implement procedures and practices related to area of assignment, ensuring compliance with City standards and timely response to emergencies.
  • Assist with general maintenance of community infrastructure, including lighting, landscape areas, medians, public right-of-ways, and bus stops.
  • Follow up on maintenance-related customer service needs in the field, such as picking up trash or removing basketball hoops.
  • Provide back-up and assistance to other technical positions in the General Services Department during storms, flooding, emergencies, or critical projects.
  • Perform duties as needed during standby duty or on-call for after-hours emergency assistance related to storm activities, streets, or other issues.
  • Respond to customer service issues, concerns, or complaints related to the area of assignment and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public.
  • Perform general maintenance, upkeep, and repair of City buildings, grounds, and vehicle fleet (when assigned to Building, Grounds and Fleet).
  • Assist in the implementation of improvements and changes to buildings, grounds, and landscaping, including setting up for meetings and special events (when assigned to Building, Grounds and Fleet).
  • Perform semi-skilled work such as plumbing, irrigation, and construction as needed to maintain City facilities (when assigned to Building, Grounds and Fleet).
  • Assure security of buildings and opening or locking of facilities after hours (when assigned to Building, Grounds and Fleet).
  • Remove vegetation and debris within creeks and channels to improve flow during storm events (when assigned to Drainage).
  • Respond to storm-related calls and emergency situations, providing assistance to ensure service restoration (when assigned to Drainage).
  • Assist with work of tree contractors for routine and emergency work (when assigned to Drainage).
  • Distribute sandbags to residents (when assigned to Drainage).
  • Provide roadside drainage maintenance (when assigned to Drainage).
  • Assist with transportation and roadside maintenance projects, including those performed with or by other agencies (when assigned to Transportation).
  • Perform roadside maintenance functions including base repair, striping, lines, and legends (when assigned to Transportation).
  • Assist with graffiti prevention and clean up (when assigned to Transportation).
