About The Position

The Maintenance Worker I/II - Street Maintenance position is a flexibly staffed series with two levels: Maintenance Worker I (entry-level) and Maintenance Worker II (journey-level). Maintenance Worker I performs routine duties under close supervision, progressing to more independent work with experience. Maintenance Worker II works under general supervision, requiring specific experience and less oversight. The role involves a wide range of installation, maintenance, repair, and construction duties related to street maintenance, including plumbing, concrete, carpentry, basic electrical work, servicing HVAC units, painting, pool maintenance, tree and vegetation management, herbicide and rodent abatement, street and traffic painting, graffiti removal, block wall restoration, sidewalk and driveway repair, storm drainage maintenance, trash removal, traffic control setup, park ground cleaning, irrigation system maintenance, and planting/maintaining greenery. Responsibilities also include operating various power equipment, maintenance vehicles, and hand tools, maintaining records, inventorying materials, and applying safe work practices. The position may require assisting other departments and responding to emergency or on-call situations.

Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D. or equivalent.
Maintenance Worker I: One year performing maintenance or repair work for an agency, company, or organization.
Maintenance Worker II: Two years of experience performing maintenance or repair work for an agency, company, or organization; OR one year of experience as a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Palmdale.
Possession of a valid California driver's license by the time of appointment and the ability to be insured with the City's insurance carrier is required.
Knowledge of common landscaping and gardening chemicals, tools, equipment, and maintenance methods.
Knowledge of methods employed in basic laboring and maintenance work.
Knowledge of safe operation of power equipment.
Knowledge of principles and practices of horticulture and landscaping.
Knowledge of basic concepts pertaining to carpentry, plumbing, and electricity.
Knowledge of basic concepts pertaining to asphalt and concrete.
Knowledge of safe work practices.
Ability to perform a variety of work activities in construction and maintenance of streets, landscape, buildings and/or pools.
Ability to use and operate standard hand tools and power equipment in an efficient and safety manner.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and directions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to learn to use the basic functions of computers, electronic devices, mobile devices, and office equipment in an efficient and safe manner.
Maintenance Worker II: Knowledge of principles and practices of maintenance work related to the area of assignment.
Maintenance Worker II: Knowledge of standard carpentry and construction techniques.
Maintenance Worker II: Knowledge of standard building and ground maintenance methods.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to perform standard maintenance duties related to area of assignment.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to oversee the work of contract staff at sites.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot during the performance of duties related to area of assignment.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to perform minor carpentry, cement, and plumbing work.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to operate and maintain a variety of light/heavy power equipment and hand tools related to area of assignment, in an efficient, correct, and safe manner; and drive light trucks and other types of equipment related to area of assignment.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to operate modern computers, electronic devices, mobile devices, and office equipment in an efficient and safe manner.
Maintenance Worker II: Ability to perform the full range of maintenance work independently, under minimal supervision.
Maintenance Worker II: Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility when completing work assignments, including instances of changing situations, priorities, and timelines.

Responsibilities

Oversee and inspect the work of contract maintenance workers related to area of assignment; inform and update appropriate staff or contractors as needed; document daily activities.
Inspect areas of assignment for safety, appearance, and vandalism problems; ensure contract staff complete work properly.
Perform installation, maintenance, design, repair, and construction duties as related to maintenance of area of assignment.
Perform plumbing, concrete, carpentry and basic electrical repairs and maintenance related to maintenance of area of assignment.
Service heating and air conditioning units.
Paint City buildings and facilities.
Inspect pool and aquatic facilities for safety; perform water quality testing and adjust treatment processes; and treat and maintain water quality for pools, fountains, and other aquatic facilities/features.
Maintain and remove trees and stumps for right-of-way clearance.
Perform weed abatement and vegetation control by use of chemicals, hand tools and light power equipment.
Operate power equipment such as weed whips, hedger, chain saw, gas blowers, and tractors.
Perform herbicide and rodent abatement duties; inventory, store, inspect storage containers and apply chemicals.
Perform street and traffic painting and striping activities; fabricate, repair and replace traffic and directional signs.
Remove graffiti at various locations in the City using a variety of methods including pressure washer, paint pump, paint cans and/or paint roller; document graffiti locations by using the graffiti tracker system for internal and external users.
Perform block wall restoration and construction, sidewalk and driveway repair, and utility enclosure pad removal and replacement.
Inspect and maintain storm drainage components such as channels and catch basins.
Remove trash and debris from roadways.
Set up traffic control for safe work zone areas including signs and flag stands.
Clean and clear park grounds, structures, and parkways of debris and hazardous conditions; set-up park facilities and structures for special events.
Install, maintain and repair irrigation facilities; install and repair backflow prevention and irrigation devices.
Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and color spots; clear sites of weeds.
Operate maintenance vehicles and equipment related to area of assignment as well as a variety of hand tools; may operate larger equipment on a periodic basis under supervision.
Perform a variety of maintenance tasks in the construction and repair of facilities related to area of assignment.
Maintain records of activities and accomplishments using electronic and mobile devices.
Inventory material and supplies for a job related to area of assignment; order materials and supplies within guidelines.
Apply safe work practices related to area of assignment.
Clean and care for tools, chemicals and equipment related to area of assignment.
May assist other department crews and projects as need; may respond to emergency and on-call situations.
Perform related work as required.
