About The Position

The Maintenance Worker/Custodian at Opportunity House is responsible for a variety of tasks to ensure the facility is well-maintained and operational. This role involves developing and maintaining employer relationships to meet HR needs, matching clients with job openings, and persuading clients and employers about CAMBA's job placement services for long-term retention. Key duties include maintaining client confidentiality, adhering to safety protocols (Universal Precautions, PPE, Federal, State, City, and CAMBA security and privacy policies), and performing daily vehicle inspections. The role also involves transporting clients and employees to appointments, meetings, and events, assisting with client move-outs, and moving supplies and items between facilities. Maintenance tasks include identifying and documenting maintenance issues, reporting equipment problems, observing and reporting safety hazards, complying with regulatory requirements, and utilizing appropriate safety standards. Specific cleaning duties include rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, windows, blinds, draperies, toilets, sinks, tubs, showers, walls, floors, and mirrors. The role also involves replacing light bulbs, dusting furniture and equipment, collaborating with building management for repairs, assisting with pest control, managing trash and recyclables, preparing for inclement weather, cleaning storm drains and gutters, performing minor plumbing repairs, polishing metalwork, and replenishing bathroom supplies. Additionally, the position may involve washing walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, and vents, plastering and painting interiors, hanging items on walls, replacing/repairing door hardware, removing graffiti, replacing floor/wall/ceiling tiles, moving facility furniture, and assembling office furniture. Tasks may be modified over time.

Requirements

  • Sufficient education and technical expertise to comprehend written and oral instructions (work orders).
  • Must have Valid New York State Driver's License and excellent driving history.
  • Must complete NYS Approved Defensive Driving Classes every 3 years.
  • Must take Refresher Computerized Defensive Driver class.
  • Must remain insurable based on CAMBA's point system throughout the duration of employment.
  • If required to drive 15 passenger van, must score at least 80% on computerized 15 passenger van improvement test every year.
  • If required to drive 15 passenger van, must pass an observed Van Road Test.
  • Acknowledge review of CAMBA's Transportation Policy.
  • May be required to become First Aid/CPR certified.
  • May be required to become certified in overdose prevention.
  • TB test required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain employer relationships to identify and meet HR needs.
  • Match appropriate clients with appropriate job openings and arrange for interviews.
  • Persuade prospective employers and client applicants of the features and advantages of CAMBA's job placement services.
  • Maintain professional relationships with clients and client confidentiality.
  • Practice Universal Precautions/Standard Protocol & Procedures.
  • Follow agency protocols on PPE.
  • Comply with Federal, State, City, and CAMBA security and privacy policies.
  • Perform daily pre-trip vehicle inspection.
  • Report inoperable or missing vehicle and/or equipment to Director of Security and Operations.
  • Notify police and file a report in the event of any accident while operating a CAMBA vehicle.
  • Notify the supervisor on duty in the event of any accident while operating a CAMBA vehicle.
  • Transport vehicle to and from auto repair shop for maintenance and repairs.
  • Complete vehicle travel log for all trips.
  • Assist passengers needing assistance to enter and/or exit vehicle.
  • Keep vehicle clean and free of litter.
  • Ensure parking plaque is in place and follow usage instructions.
  • Secure EZ-Pass, gas card, vehicle cell phone, and other vehicle valuables.
  • Transport clients and employees to appointments, meetings, and events.
  • Assist with client move-outs by transporting clients and belongings to permanent housing.
  • Move items (e.g., boxed files, facility items) from facility to CAMBA warehouse; pick up and transport supplies from the warehouse and deliver them to the facility.
  • Identify and document all maintenance issues on work order form.
  • Report maintenance equipment issues (e.g., inoperable, missing).
  • Observe and report any facility conditions that could pose a safety hazard or cause property damage.
  • Comply with all maintenance regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize appropriate safety standards (e.g., wear safety goggles, masks, appropriate attire) and display safety signs.
  • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, window blinds, and draperies.
  • Clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, tubs, showers, shower fixtures, walls, floors, curtains, stalls, and mirrors.
  • Replace light bulbs, light switch covers, electrical outlet covers, and ballasts as needed.
  • Dust and/or wipe furniture, equipment, and ceiling fans.
  • Collaborate with DHS or building landlords to facilitate repairs to facility.
  • Assist in responding to pest issues (e.g., bed bugs, mice) by working with exterminators.
  • Separate and transport trash, recyclables, and waste to disposal area and consolidate for pickup.
  • Respond to and prepare for inclement weather (e.g., prepare sandbags, tie down loose outdoor items, remove snow and ice).
  • Clean storm drains and gutters.
  • Make minor plumbing repairs (e.g., snake a drain).
  • Polish metalwork, including lighting fixtures.
  • Replenish bathroom supplies (e.g., toilet tissue, paper towels, hand soap).
  • Wash walls, ceiling, woodwork, windows, sills, door panels, heating and cooling vents, and air conditioner filters.
  • Plaster and paint interiors of buildings.
  • Hang and/or move more permanent items on walls (e.g., bulletin boards).
  • Replace/repair door handles or lock cylinders as needed.
  • Remove graffiti from interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Replace cracked or missing floor tiles, wall tiles, and ceiling tiles.
  • Move facility furniture (e.g., bed, lockers) from one area to another.
  • Assemble office furniture and move it to the proper location.
  • May cut and trim grass.
  • Tasks may be modified, expanded, and/or assigned over time.
