About The Position

Needed for the 2026-27 school year: A full-time Custodian/General Maintenance Worker at Covington ISD in Covington, Texas. This is an at-will, non-contract position on a 12-month basis. Salaries are determined by means of a board adopted 31+ step pay scale. The Custodial Primary Purpose is to clean and maintain district facilities using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds. The General Maintenance Primary Purpose is to perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems throughout district, and to assist with maintenance of grounds.

Requirements

  • Clear and Valid Texas Driver license
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic construction, repair procedures and techniques, and routine maintenance of buildings and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • One year experience in general building maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
  • Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
  • Repair and maintenance of district facilities, including repairing woodwork; replacing electrical switches, fixtures, and motors; painting, repairing, and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems; and replacing broken glass.
  • Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Detect and report needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment.
  • Complete repairs as directed on work orders or by maintenance manager.
  • Assist in maintenance and repairs of all district vehicles.
  • Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds.
  • Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
  • Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Inspect tools, machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance as required.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
