About The Position

The Upper Arlington Public Library is seeking a self-motivated Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities team. In this role, you will support the upkeep of our library facilities by performing routine and intense cleaning, monitoring, and preventative maintenance on building systems, equipment, and vehicles. Key responsibilities include the daily transport of library materials between locations, performing minor repairs—such as painting, plumbing, and carpentry—and coordinating with vendors and contractors as needed.

Requirements

  • Firm working knowledge of the concepts of electricity and mechanics.
  • Working knowledge of preventative maintenance standards and procedures.
  • Must have basic project management skills including scheduling tasks, planning for supplies and anticipating necessary maintenance schedules.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, electrical materials, plumbing equipment, painting/patching materials and cleaning supplies.
  • Ability to handle routine problems, work with minimal supervision and keep manager informed of departmental needs and concerns.
  • Ability to work a rotation of weekend coverage as scheduled.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of insurance.
  • Must meet driver insurability as verified through Library’s insurance company.
  • Must be comfortable driving an extended length cargo van.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Proven experience and/or knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
  • Proven experience and/or knowledge of building and grounds maintenance and janitorial procedures.
  • Extensive mobility: extensive amounts of time spent standing, walking, stretching, bending, pushing moderately heavy carts, lifting weight up to 100 lbs.
  • Physical ability to utilize lift equipment.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform lifting, climbing ladders, moving equipment, and shoveling.
  • Will work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Position requires working irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Daily local travel by personal or library automobile is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of basic building and grounds repair and maintenance practices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and monitors building systems (security, electrical, plumbing, lighting) to ensure proper working conditions under the direction of the Facilities Manager.
  • Regularly performs inspections on key building systems.
  • Responsible for cleaning, care, and maintenance of all three branches (buildings) and property (mechanical equipment).
  • Performs both general and deep and thorough cleaning of library interiors including restrooms and meeting rooms.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and coordinates upkeep and repair of library equipment and vehicles.
  • Interacts with vendors and contractors to provide information and answer questions, as needed and directed by Facilities Manager.
  • Performs semi-skilled plumbing maintenance at all branches including repair/replacement of flush valves and other fixtures, repair of supply and wastewater lines, clear stopped drains and repair of leaks.
  • Performs some carpentry work at all branches including repair/replacement of doors and door trim, door locks and panic bars, minor repair of electric door openers, drywall and painting.
  • Assembles and moves furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Performs special tasks and special projects.
  • Drives the library van to Library locations or other designated locations.
  • Unloads and loads materials and equipment.
  • Responds to maintenance ticket requests as part of the Facilities team.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of facility supplies.
  • Assists with outside building maintenance on a seasonal basis including snow and ice removal and washing windows.
  • Sets up meeting rooms and event spaces with tables, chairs and other equipment as needed.
  • Opens and closes the building as assigned.
  • Monitors safety conditions in buildings and vehicles in order to eliminate hazards.
  • Stays up to date with new developments, best practices, participates in continuing education events and attends appropriate conferences/trainings.
  • Ensures that any maintenance problems that affect patrons and staff members are handled in a safe and timely manner.
  • Reports any conditions in need of repair to the department manager.
  • Assists in training new staff in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Follows library safety and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
