About The Position

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) is seeking a Maintenance Technician/Welder to join their team. This role is crucial for maintaining and repairing electrical generation and distribution systems in 59 remote Alaskan communities. The position involves a mix of construction, major overhauls, repairs, preventive maintenance, and improvising temporary replacements. The Maintenance Technician/Welder will also instruct Power Plant Operators and build positive relationships with member-owners and village councils. This role requires significant travel (approximately 80% of the year) to diverse and remote locations, offering opportunities for adventure and experiencing unique parts of Alaska. The successful candidate will be responsible for welding, fabricating, and repairing metal structures and equipment, requiring a strong understanding of welding techniques, blueprints, and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a welder.
  • Experience in diesel generation systems or similar technical fields.
  • Ability to adapt to changing tasks and environments in remote locations.
  • Self-motivation and a responsible work ethic for field operations.
  • Strong understanding of welding techniques, blueprints, and safety standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in welding from an accredited institution.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing, directing, and performing construction tasks necessary to supply electrical energy to remote villages via diesel generation and distribution systems.
  • Performing major overhauls, repairs, and preventive maintenance on electrical generation and distribution systems.
  • Improvising temporary replacements for equipment.
  • Instructing Power Plant Operators in equipment use, safe practices, and maintenance during field operations.
  • Maintaining good relations with member-owners and village councils.
  • Building member-owners' understanding and confidence in AVEC's value, mission, and goals.
  • Welding, fabricating, and repairing metal structures and equipment.
  • Adhering to welding techniques, blueprints, and safety standards.
